Sunday’s defeat at the hands of West Ham mean Manchester United have now lost two in a row in the Premier League and their Champions League dreams are hanging by a thread.

They are currently only a point above arch-rivals Liverpool in fifth and two behind third-placed Newcastle. With the Europa League also not an option, Erik ten Hag needs to get his team to perform in the last couple of weeks.

One of the biggest culprits behind United’s recent dismal displays has been goalkeeper David de Gea who was at fault for the West Ham winner.

    DDG errors keep rising

He allowed a tame Saïd Benrahma shot from 25 yards to trickle into the net, almost akin to the horror goal he conceded back at Brentford earlier in the season.

The Spaniard also was at fault for two of Sevilla’s goals that knocked United out of Europe this season and it is becoming a recurrent issue now.

While question marks keep being raised about his footwork and his inability to command his area and act as a sweeper on occasion, his shot-stopping is also coming under the scanner frequently.

While Ten Hag keeps publicly backing his goalie, ESPN has revealed that privately he has reservations about the Spaniard and has refused to give the Spain international any assurances over his place next season.

De Gea’s contract is up at the end of the season and while United want him to sign the new deal, it will be on a much reduced wage and he will not be guaranteed the No 1 spot any more.

“Manchester United remain committed to keeping David de Gea next season but he has been given no assurances he will continue as the club’s No.1,” the report added.

Time for a change at United

While fans are clamouring for a new goalkeeper, the Dutch manager is aware of budget issues and with the club in the middle of a takeover, there is bound to be confusion.

As mentioned by The Telegraph, the Reds are still monitoring Diogo Costa of Porto and Brentford’s David Raya but as of now, a striker is the main priority for the manager.

United will also take a call on Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest and injured. There is plenty of interest in his services while Ten Hag could also decide to take a look if required.

While it is well known that a striker and midfielder are high on Ten Hag’s priority list, De Gea’s frequent clangers are a timely reminder that it is high time the club bring in a new No 1.
