You can tell an athlete is deadlifting some serious weight when the barbell starts to bend with each rep. And that’s exactly what happened when 125-kilogram powerlifter Shane Hunt pulled a 420-kilogram (926-pound) triple PR in training.
The set was captured on camera and posted to Hunt’s Instagram page on May 7, 2023. Hunt pulled the weight three times in a sumo stance, wearing lifting straps and a lifting belt. Check it out below:

Hunt has had a busy competitive season thus far in 2023. He racked up first-place finishes at the 2023 WRPF The Ghost Clash 2 in Florida and the 2023 USA-UA Pioneer on the Beach in Texas. Clocking in at 270.7 pounds for his most recent competition in early April, Hunt deadlifted 3.28 times his body weight, locking out 410 kilograms (903.9 pounds).
Who Is Shane Hunt?
Shane Hunt made his competitive powerlifting debut at 15 with a win at the 2013 American Powerlifting Federation (APF) Florida State Meet. In his 11-year competitive powerlifting career, he has appeared in 16 sanctioned contests, of which he’s won 12 — a win percentage of 75 percent.
While Hunt has competed across four different weight categories in his career (105, 110, 120, and 125 kilograms), he competes primarily in the 125-kilogram class now. Here are his best competition lifts, according to Open Powerlifting:
- Squat — 360 kilograms (793.7 pounds)
- Bench Press — 232.5 kilograms (512.6 pounds)
- Deadlift — 425 kilograms (937 pounds)
- Total — 1,015 kilograms (2,237.7 pounds)
Hunt’s 425-kilogram deadlift is the second heaviest ever in the 125-kilogram class behind all-time raw deadlift world record holder Danny Grigsby‘s 487.5-kilogram (1,074.6-pound) pull. Seeing as Hunt eclipsed 900 pounds on his deadlift in 2021 and is still progressing well in the gym, it seems like only a matter of time before he reaches a 1,000-pound milestone deadlift.
