The Dallas Cowboys will soon have to resolve a dilemma regarding CeeDee Lamb’s future with the team.
Lamb has two more years left on his rookie deal with the Cowboys. He is set to hold a cap hit of $4.457 million this year. Dallas picked up his fifth-year option in April, so the third-year wide receiver will earn $17.911 million in the 2024 season.
There have been multiple instances in years past where extension discussions between a player and a team drag out and end up creating an unnecessary off-field distraction. For Lamb, he does not believe this to be the case with his extension dilemma with Dallas.
“I’m going to be 100 percent honest, I’m not even distracted,” Lamb said at the Cowboys’ OTAs on Thursday. “The money, definitely worried about it. But it’s not nothing that’s really on my mind every day that I wake up or when I come to the building.
“I don’t really think about how much money am I gonna make. It’s really just all about coming in and showing my worth, and then let everything else handle itself.”
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is well aware that the team will soon have to come to a resolution on this matter. In the big picture, Jones hopes that Lamb will end up staying put with the Cowboys.
“As we move forward, that’ll become a bigger priority here as we move past the draft,” Jones said in April. “We’ve historically signed a lot of guys during that training camp period to extensions.
“But guys like CeeDee Lamb and Diggs are certainly on our radar in terms of guys that we’d love to have around here for another five, six years, whatever that turns out to be.”
Lamb is coming off of the most productive campaign of his run with the Cowboys, as he emerged as Dak Prescott’s go-to target over the course of the season. He hauled in 107 receptions for 1,359 receiving yards and nine touchdown catches last year. His potent 2022 campaign was good enough to earn him second-team All-Pro honors.
The Cowboys’ OTAs schedule will continue on June 2.
