The 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games will be the last one for coach Ben Bergeron. In a press release on June 13, Bergeron announced that he would “retire from coaching elite athletes at the CrossFit Games” following the 2023 Games in Madison, WI, on Aug. 1-6.

Instead of coaching elite Games competitors as he has for a decade and a half, Bergeron will “refocus 100 percent of his efforts on the launch of CompTrain 3.0 with a new app.” That new app will include a “new approach” and yet-to-be-unveiled “expanded features.” Bergeron aims to offer the tools he used to help those athletes reach the Games to the CompTrain 3.0 app users.

In Bergeron’s stead, nine-time CrossFit Games competitor Cole Sager will be the Elite Athlete Head Coach at CompTrain for the 2024 CrossFit season.

During Bergeron’s coaching career, he has logged a staggering 253 athlete visits to the CrossFit Games, including “10 champions & 19 podiums across the [Individual] male, [Individual] female, Masters, Teens, and Teams divisions.” Some of the biggest names Bergeron has coached include Sager, Brooke Wells, two-time Fittest Woman on Earth® Katrin Davíðsdóttir, and five-time Fittest Man on Earth® Mat Fraser.

Bergeron launched CompTrain in 2011, implementing the “camp model now commonly used in the industry.” His student-turned-successor Cole Sager has been a mainstay at the CrossFit Games since 2014 and has never finished lower than 20th in his nine appearances at the Games. Sager’s career-best Games finish was fifth in 2016. Below are Sager’s career results at the Games:

CrossFit Games Results — Cole Sager

    • 2014 CrossFit Games — 17th place
    • 2015 CrossFit Games — Seventh place
    • 2016 CrossFit Games — Fifth place
    • 2017 CrossFit Games — 16th place
    • 2018 CrossFit Games — Seventh place
    • 2019 CrossFit Games — 11th place
    • 2020 CrossFit Games — 20th place
    • 2021 CrossFit Games — 14th place
    • 2022 CrossFit Games — 13th place

Sager last competed in the 2023 North America West Semifinal from May 25-28. He placed ninth overall — Patrick Vellner of Canada won — to earn his 10th CrossFit Games appearance.

Those interested in the new app can visit the CompTrain website now to register for access to the free public beta and experience first-hand CompTrain3.0.
