Strongman Ivan Makarov is one of the main contenders to eclipse Hafthor Björnsson‘s all-time heaviest deadlift of 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds). Makarov routinely pulls over 1,000 pounds in training and has attempted a 502-kilogram deadlift previously but missed.

On June 18, Makarov scored a 476-kilogram (1,049.4-pound) deadlift double PR while wearing a lifting suit in training. He shared the set in a video on his Instagram page. Check it out below:

    Ivan Makarov’s Deadlift PR

In 2021, Makarov won the World Deadlift Championships with a 475-kilogram pull. He pulled just over that championship-clinching weight for two reps in the video above. For each rep, Makarov hitched the barbell once it past his knees — a legal maneuver in strongman.

Per Giants Live, Makarov began his competitive strongman career at the 2016 Strongman Team Open Challenge. According to Strongman Archives, his first international strongman contest was the 2017 Strongman Champions League (SCL) World Overhead Lift Championships.

In 2018, he won the Georgian Strongman Open Championship and was runner-up at the International Championship. Makarov also won the Arnold Amateur European Strongman Championship, winning four of five events in Barcelona. As a pro strongman, he has competed in eight elite competitions, though several of them, including the 2022 Strongman World Open, as a deadlift specialist — participating only in the max deadlift events.

2023 Strongman World Open/2023 World Deadlift Championships Roster

Makarov’s latest PR suggests he’s still chasing the all-time heaviest deadlift record. The likeliest time he will make an attempt at 505 kilograms is at the 2023 Strongman World Open, which features the 2023 World Deadlift Championships, on Sept. 2, 2023, in Cardiff, Wales. Makarov is already confirmed on the roster.
