Powerlifters only get better with age. To celebrate her 50th birthday on June 27, 2023, Jen Thompson — the all-time raw bench press world record holder in the 60-kilogram weight class — took to her Instagram page to share a video wherein she locked out a 320-pound bench press raw.

For context as to how heavy Thompson’s birthday lift was, she noted that her body weight at the time of the lift was 144 pounds, four pounds shy of the weight cap for the 67.5-kilogram class that she has recently competed in. Thompson’s birthday bench press of 145 kilograms (320 pounds) is one kilogram shy of her all-time raw world record in that class and one kilogram more than the second heaviest-ever bench press in that class — Carola Garra‘s 144-kilogram bench press at the 2023 FIPL 6 Gara Nazionale Classic.

Check out Thompson’s birthday bench press in the video below:

It doesn’t matter how old you are. You can build strength and live a long healthy life by the choices you make.

While this was a training lift, the likelihood that it would get white lights in competition, signaling a good lift, is high, given that Thompson paused the barbell on her chest before beginning the ascent. This is not a surprising lift from Thompson given her world record accolades — she still holds the all-time world record raw bench press in the 60-kilogram class of 136.5 kilograms (300.9 pounds), scored at the 2012 NAPF Raw Challenge.

Since making her professional powerlifting debut over two decades ago, Thompson has made 13 appearances at the IPF World Bench Press Championships, according to Open Powerlifting. Of those 13 appearances, she won gold nine times and has never missed the podium. She finished first overall in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2010, and 2016-19. Her competition-best bench press is 148.5 kilograms at the 2022 USAPL Carolina Primetime.

Thompson may be at Masters competition age, but she’s still holding her own and then some in Open division competition. Based on the caption of her Instagram post, we can expect to see her continue dominating sanctioned meets on the world stage. As she puts it, her current goals are to “Keep breaking barriers. Be the strongest oldest woman out there!”
