Red Bull Arena was where it all began for White, as a promising SuperDraft pick out of Duke by New York Red Bulls. It was also home, growing up an hour away in Flemington, N.J.

Vancouver is now home, after the Caps plucked him off the Red Bulls bench for pocket change in 2021 and gave him a chance to flourish.
White’s 44th career goal for the Whitecaps came 15 minutes in, a sublime back heel between his own legs, pushing him past Camilo into sole possession of first place in Whitecaps goals.

His group hug was muted, subdued, his mind already on scoring the next one, and the record forgotten until assist man Ryan Raposo gave him a grin.
“There was a there was a lot of emotions going into the game,” said the 28-year-old. “Ever since I got traded, it was one that I was kind of waiting for.
“There’s some pressure there because you want to put a good performance for everyone that’s showed you love and come to support you, but you had to put that in the background … and focus on doing what you can for the team.
“Coming back, seeing a lot of old faces, (Red Bulls) showed me a lot of love — especially with the the video before the game. I still have a lot of love for this club, this state, this city, but … (a big celebration) just didn’t feel like the right thing to do.”

The game finished in a 1-1 draw, pushing Vancouver (5-2-2) to the best start in team history and an undefeated record on the road.
The historic play started with Pedro Vite feeding an overlapping Raposo in the box, and the wingback laced a low, fast cross across the box, where White redirected it into the back of the net. It was their first shot of the game.
White nearly added a second first-half tally to his total 15 minutes later, but Red Bulls keeper Carlos Coronel got a quick enough drop the keep White’s shot from making it through his legs.

The New Jersey product had more than 60 friends and family in attendance at the game, one of the rare occasions he got to play in front of them since moving to the West Coast.
He’d played for New York’s Premier Development League team during the summers while at Duke University, and then Red Bulls drafted him 16th overall in 2018. He broke through to the first team and showed great promise in the Red Bulls system, but found himself benched during Gerhard Struber’s tenure, leading to a trade to the Whitecaps in 2021. He’s since played himself into form as the highest-scoring American striker in MLS, and challenged for the Golden Boot last year with 15 regular season goals — matching his total from his three-year tenure in New York.

White, who has five goals and three assists in 10 games across all competitions this year, now has 50 career MLS goals — becoming just the sixth player in league history to reach that mark without taking a penalty kick.
Now that the record has been surpassed, White can go back to his preferred spot out of the limelight.
“I just said to Vanni … enough’s enough,” he laughed during Saturday’s post-game, his umpteenth availability this week.
“I’m not really one to crave the spotlight, the attention, but it comes with the job; it’s something that you have to handle. I do my best to represent myself, the club, my family well, and hopefully I can continue doing that.”
