Taylor Martin went the distance and registered 13 strikeouts in helping the Jurupa Valley softball team to a 10-2 victory over Excelsior Charter in a CIF Southern Section Division 8 semifinal game Friday afternoon.
Jurupa Valley will face the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between Hesperia Christian and Temecula Prep. That championship will take place May 17 or 18 at Barber Bark in Irvine. It will be the program’s first appearance in the section finals.
Martin helped her cause in the bottom of the second inning, when she smacked a two-run double to give the Jaguars the lead.
Excelsior Charter got one run back in the top of the third, but Jurupa Valley answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophia Padilla doubled in the first run, and another double by Yazmeen Ruiz brought home two more and extended the lead to 5-1.
Ruiz had an RBI groundout in the fifth inning, and the Jaguars tacked on four more runs in the sixth. Veronica Montoya doubled home to run, and Emma Enciso-Rios follwed with an RBI double. Ruiz capped the scoring with an run-scoring single, giving her four RBIs on the day.
Padilla went 3 for 4 and scored twice for Jurupa Valley, which won the Mountain Valley League championship this season. Crystal Macias and Enciso-Rios also scored a pair of runs for the Jaguars.
