Likely one of the most anticipated debuts in MLB history will take place this Saturday in Pittsburgh, as top Pirates prospect and former SEC baseball great Paul Skenes officially takes to a major league mound for the first time.
So, ahead of Skenes’ highly anticipated MLB debut Saturday, why not take a look back at his SEC career?
One of the most talented pitchers in SEC history, Skenes transferred to LSU from Air Force prior to the 2023 season where he was among the nation’s top two-way players. However, Skenes would transition to being solely a pitcher at LSU, which was an impactful move for the right-hander.
During his lone season in Baton Rouge, Skenes helped lead the Tigers to the 2023 national championship by making 19 total starts, owning a 13-2 record with a 1.69 ERA and 209-20 K-BB ratio across 122.2 IP. Skenes also had two complete games during that season, as well as 14 total starts in which he had double-digit strikeouts.
As expected with those numbers, Skenes received numerous accolades at the end of the season that included SEC Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-SEC, Consensus All-American, and more. Skenes was also selected very early in the 2023 MLB Draft, taken No. 1 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Having dominated minor league baseball since similar to how he did at LSU, will Skenes now continue that in the big leagues?
