Radio host Doug Gottlieb accepts Green Bay men’s basketball coaching job: Reports Fitnessnacks

Fox Sports radio host Doug Gottlieb is headed from the airwaves to the college basketball sidelines. Gottlieb has accepted the Green Bay head-coaching job, according to multiple reports, and he will also continue his Fox radio show that runs daily from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

Gottlieb, 48, has long desired to coach at the college level and popped up in various searches through the years, including interviewing at his alma mater, Oklahoma State, in 2017. He has spent the last 20 years working in media, including stints at ESPN and CBS. He has not coached in college, though he previously coached the United States at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

But Green Bay turning to a media personality is not the most shocking element of this move. It’s almost the equivalent of a school hiring a former NBA great without any previous coaching experience, and Gottlieb has been entrenched in the college basketball world for years.

What’s unprecedented is the fact Gottlieb will coach and continue his national radio show simultaneously. Former Vermont coach Tom Brennan co-hosted a morning show in Vermont, but Gottlieb will host a national radio show in the middle of the workday.

Green Bay was in a tricky spot in the hiring cycle because of the timing of its opening. Sundance Wicks, who spent just one year at the school, left Monday to accept the opening at Wyoming, which was created by Jeff Linder surprisingly leaving with three years left on his contract to become an assistant coach at Texas Tech.

Wicks orchestrated one of the best turnarounds in the sport this past season, inheriting a team that won three games and then went 18-14.

Green Bay returns four of its eight leading scorers but is replacing its only double-digit scorer in Noah Reynolds, who transferred to TCU. Wicks had already added four new players for next year’s roster, so Gottlieb will have to get to work retaining those recruits and the players on his roster. The players have 30 days to enter the transfer portal because of the coaching change.

Gottlieb made a name for himself as the point guard at Oklahoma State in the late 1990s, leading the NCAA in assists in his final two seasons with the Cowboys. He started his career at Notre Dame and left after one season following an incident when he stole a teammate’s credit card and used it to make multiple purchases.

In addition to his radio show, Gottlieb hosts a podcast called “All Ball” where he mostly interviews basketball coaches.
