Former Providence Friars guard Garwey Dual is currently in the 2024 NBA draft process, hoping to become a one-and-done despite a pedestrian first year under coach Kim English.
Dual recommitted to Providence after coach Ed Gooley left for Georgetown, but the 6’5 guard averaged just 3.3 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game with the Friars, shooting 40% on two pointers and 25% from three.
Still, Dual has an extremely long 7’0 wingspan and showcased why he was such a highly coveted recruit out of high school – scoring 11 points with four steals and three assists in a scrimmage on Saturday at the NBA combine.
Dual admitted he has not focused on the transfer portal at all while he remains totally immersed in the NBA draft process, but if he doesn’t get the feedback he wants he plans to return to college and look for a program that will give him a chance to play point guard.
The point guard market cleared out significantly over the past week or so, with AJ Hoggard the latest lead guard type to commit, landing at Vanderbilt.
Dual is now among the highest upside guards available in the portal, and below is a list of five programs that could use a point guard, starting with a fellow Big East school:

Dual is a native of Houston but he did play some high school ball in Carmel, Indiana, and a move to Butler could allow him to start at point guard while staying in the Big East.
Thad Matta’s team saw guards Posh Alexander (Dayton) and DJ Davis (Washington) depart via the portal, and the only guard replacement so far is Tulane’s Kolby King who is more of an off guard than a true point guard.
Dual’s best bet to start at point guard for a high major program may well be at Butler, and while the program has not been elite lately they have produced NBA talent and have the opportunity Dual is looking for.

Another option to remain in the Big East is at Seton Hall, a program decimated by eight departures via the transfer portal – including star guards Kadary Richmond and Dre Davis who went to St. John’s and Ole Miss, respectively.
Shaheen Holloway has added two guards in the portal, Chaunce Jenkins from Old Dominion and Zion Harmon from Bethune-Cookman, but Dual is better than both and would give the Pirates a tough, high upside guard with Big East experience.
For Dual, a chance to play in Holloway’s defensive scheme and take on a role similar to Richmond should help boost his draft stock.

Syracuse is the only team on this list who seems to have a point guard in place, having added Hofstra transfer Jaquan Carlos to replace Judah Mintz (NBA) and Quadir Copeland (McNeese).
Carlos averaged 6.3 assists per game last year for the Pride, but Dual could give him a serious run for playing time at the true point guard position – and would compliment returnee JJ Starling as well.
Syracuse is in the hunt for more guard depth, and Dual could thrive in the ACC and in a program that produces NBA talent with regularity.

Dual played high school ball at Southern California Academy, and if he’s wanting to return to some warmer weather perhaps joining Bobby Hurley at Arizona State is in the cards.
The Sun Devils lost Frankie Collins to TCU, Jose Perez is out of eligibility, and Jamiyea Neal transferred to Creighton – leaving a lot of room for playing time in the backcourt.
ASU brought in Alston Mason, who averaged 3.6 assists per game at Missouri State, as well as seldom used Ole Miss guard Austin Nunez, but Dual could easily be offered a chance to start at point guard in this system – and with the program moving to the Big 12 he would get a chance to strut his stuff against the best teams in college basketball.

There aren’t many high major programs that have virtually no options at point guard, but with Jaeden Zackery hitting the portal and committing to Clemson, and Mason Madsen headed to Utah, the Eagles are looking at junior Chas Kelley (1.6 APG) or Clemson transfer Josh Beadle (0.8 APG) as the top options.
BC isn’t exactly a basketball powerhouse, which could give Dual pause, but if he wants to be a true starting point guard at the high major level this is absolutely a place that it could happen – and in the ACC he’d get a chance to compete against Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, and a new look Louisville squad.
