LOS ANGELES — After a run of 13 consecutive games did the Dodgers no favors, perhaps a five-city tour is more their speed.
Even with Tyler Glasnow on the mound on Wednesday night, the Dodgers were overcome by the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 6-0 loss when the offense disappeared and a three-game series was squandered.
The daunting top of the order of Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith went a combined 2 for 14 mostly against right-hander Brandon Hughes, who was coming off an outing when he gave up eight runs on 11 hits.
“I just thought we just didn’t play well, didn’t swing the bat and we lost a series,” Manager Dave Roberts said after the Dodgers lost a home series to the Diamondbacks for the first time since 2018. “I think overall, I thought it was still a good stretch for us, I do, but there’s certainly a lot of things that we can be better at I think each facet of the game.”
It was the first time the Dodgers were shut out at home against their division rival since a 13-0 loss on Sept. 4, 2017.
Perhaps the view of an upcoming day off was too much to ignore. The Dodgers went 7-6 over the demanding two-week stretch and will have only Thursday’s free time to rest up for another challenging stretch. Up next is a run of consecutive road series, a single home series and consecutive road series again.
From Friday through June 9, the Dodgers will play more games in New York, than they will at home. The next 15 games will include three in Queens against the Mets and conclude with three in the Bronx against the Yankees.
If there is any consolation, they will get a day off before and after a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies from May 31-June 2.
“I don’t think that makes a whole lot of sense to go play the Mets, come back and go right back to New York,” said Gavin Lux, who had a pair of hits in back-to-back games. “But that’s part of the plan for the Dodgers (to play) on the weekend against big teams. … I don’t think any of us are going to make excuses or complain about it. Just go out there and play baseball.”
Glasnow (6-3) gave up three runs on four hits over five innings with a walk and six strikeouts as he took the loss in consecutive starts for the first time with the Dodgers.
He gave up nothing of consequence in the first four innings, save for a first-inning single that extended Ketel Marte’s career-best hitting streak to 21 games.
In the fifth, though, a walk to Gabriel Moreno and a single from Kevin Newman were cashed in on Corbin Carroll’s two-run triple to the wall in right center. Carroll then scored on a Glasnow wild pitch.
“It was fine in the beginning and that fifth inning, it just got away from me,” Glasnow said. “I think just looking back and trying to take what I did in the first four into my next start and trying to figure out why I was late and try to wash it and go into the next one.”
Glasnow had a scare in the second inning when he was hit on the back of the left ankle by a 105.5 mph comebacker from Randal Grichuk, but he hardly flinched as the ball deflected into left field.
Was there pain?
“A little bit, but nothing crazy though,” he said.
Arizona made it 4-0 in the sixth inning when Walker hit his second home run of the series, this one off of right-hander Elieser Hernandez. Marte’s eighth-inning homer off of left-hander Ryan Yarbrough clanked off the cage connected to the left-field foul pole.
“He’s one of my favorite players to watch,” Roberts said of Walker. “He just plays the game the right way. He uses the whole field. He doesn’t give away pitches. He plays defense. He’s a Gold Glover, runs the bases. Yeah, he’s one of the guys that I really respect as a ballplayer. You just don’t like it when he’s in the batter’s box for sure.”
The Dodgers were outscored 17-9 in the three-game series and have dropped two games in a row for just the second time since April 21.
Up next is some time to pack bags and take a flight to Cincinnati before a trip to New York to face the Mets. The home series against the Rockies will be followed immediately by visits to Pittsburgh and New York again for a showdown with the Yankees, one of the few teams able to match the Dodgers both in pitching and hitting this season.
By then, the Dodgers figure to have a handle on their own offense, which went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position Wednesday and was shut out for the third time this season.
“Just really uncharacteristic,” Roberts said of the offense. “I think it is one of those things where we’ve just got to flush this series and get to the off day which we have and reset for Friday.”
