Chinye’s training is surpassing the record books.

When a world-record-holding athlete eclipses their world record in training, the expectations for their next contest skyrocket. Of course, any top-tier powerlifter will have high expectations whenever they step onto a lifting platform, but Nonso Chinye isn’t just chipping past his biggest lifts; he’s decimating them.

The 19-year-old Chinye holds the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Sub-Junior raw deadlift world record with 363 kilograms. According to Open Powerlifting, Chinye holds the all-time Teen 18-19 raw deadlift record via his third attempt at the 2024 BP British Junior Powerlifting Championships — a stellar 375.5-kilogram pull.

On May 18, 2024, Chinye posted a video to his Instagram page in which he raw deadlifted 385 kilograms (848.8 pounds). Check out Chinye’s training lift below:

Chinye’s training lift with an additional 9.5 kilograms on top of two months later did not seem at the top of his range. For clarity, it’s a whopping 22 kilograms beyond his IPF record. Per his caption:

Could’ve repped it, didn’t need to.

Those are gold-medal-contention-fightin’ words but warranted. Chinye used a mixed grip while wearing a lifting belt and a body covered in chalk. Standing in a conventional stance, he pulled the barbell from the floor and slowly, steadily ascended to a firm lockout held for a moment longer than was likely necessary to receive a down command from a judge.

    Nonso Chinye’s Powerlifting Career

Chinye has quite the resume despite his young powerlifting career. Since his competitive debut at the 2022 EPA South East Winter Divisional, Chinye has competed in seven sanctioned contests. Of those seven, Chinye won six. His only blemish was silver at the 2022 IPF World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships in the Sub-Junior division.

    • 2022 EPA South East Winter Divisional — First Place
    • 2022 BP British Junior & Sub-Junior Championships — First Place
    • 2022 IPF World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships — Second Place
    • 2023 BP Gymshark British Junior Championships — First Place
    • 2023 IPF World Junior and Sub-Junior Classic Championships — First Place
    • 2023 EPF European Junior and Sub-Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships — First Place
    • 2024 BP British Junior Powerlifting Championships — First Place

Chinye’s Instagram caption suggested that his next sanctioned meet will be the 2024 IPF World Classic & Equipped Sub-Junior & Junior Powerlifting Championships in Valletta, Malta, from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8, 2024. Expect Chinye to call for a record-shattering weight on the barbell.
