A large fleet of police vehicles blocked both sides of the 91 Freeway in Anaheim Hills Friday morning, May 24, while SWAT teams surrounded a sedan amid Memorial Day weekend traffic.
The standoff began just after 8 a.m., and was the result of a police chase that began in Corona earlier that morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
As of 10:30 a.m., two SWAT vehicles from Anaheim and Corona police were pinning the blue sedan between them, with a third SWAT vehicle positioned nearby, appearing to provide cover for about a dozen SWAT officers, some with guns drawn and others minding police dogs, all on the westbound side of the 91 near Lakeview Avenue.
Numerous police cruisers crowded the westbound side of the freeway behind the SWAT vehicles.
There appeared to be one person inside the sedan who was possibly armed, according to ABC 7.
Police have not said why they were pursuing the sedan. Corona police were not immediately available for comment.
Nearby Crescent Elementary School was locked down during the standoff with police officers on campus. Parents were informed they could pick up their children.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
