Hard work and a lot of heart could help propel Taylor Jeszenszky to a successful career as a jockey. Jeszenszky currently works as a hotwalker, groom and exercise rider at Hastings Racecourse. She probably would have already been part of the jockey colony at Hastings if not for getting trampled by a horse last year. Seeing her you would not know she had to undergo extensive reconstructive surgery on her face.

“It has been a long recovery,” said Jeszenszky. “I’ve had three surgeries and I still need one or two more. I had major fractures all over my face and broke my jaw. I have six titanium plates in my face and a mesh under an eye. I still need to restructure my eye socket and move my eye forward. In the meantime, I am functioning well and able to gallop horses.”

Jeszenszky, 26, grew up in Surrey with no real exposure to horses. She was 20 years old when she found her way to Hastings.

“I was between jobs and was bored. Luckily I found the Groom’s School at Hastings where I absolutely fell in love with the track.”

Jeszenszky started off as a hotwalker cooling off horses and was soon working as a groom. She eventually got on horses and was well schooled at Canmor Farms by trainer Mark Cloutier and jockey Amadeo Perez.

After getting the basics down she moved to Alberta where under trainer Rod Haynes she learned how to ride on a racetrack at Century Mile.

“I learned a lot about riding horses from Mark and Amadeo, but I needed to take the next step,” said Jeszenszky. “Rod was great. He taught me about the starting gate and everything I needed to know about being on the track.”

Trainer Frank Barroby thinks Jeszenszky has a bright future as a jockey. Barroby was a leading jockey in Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2010.

“She gets along with horses extremely well,” said Barroby. “Mostly because she is so relaxed. You can tell if they have it when you leg them up and she seems to have it. Even tough horses gallop well for her, and she works a horse really nice. Plus, she has a great attitude.”

Jeszenszky’s first stop at Hastings in the mornings is at the barn of trainer Dino Condilenios where she still walks horses and works as a groom.

“She is very hard working and always is willing to do whatever you ask of her,” said Condilenios. “I think she’ll do well as a jockey. Horses seem to respond to her and when she gets on them, they seem to be happy.”

Despite her being seriously injured last year, she is not afraid of the dangers of being a jockey.

“The scariest thing is not being able to come back and do it,” she said.

If all goes well Jeszenszky will start her career midsummer.

FRIDAY SELECTIONS: Post time 7 p.m.

RACE 2: HOAX was an easy winner for leading trainer Steve Henson at this level two back before running into a tough group in an open $25K claimer May 17. She fits better in this spot.

RACE 4: WEALTHY TEXAN has been a handful for trainer Mel Snow this spring, but he is the speed of the speed and considering the track has been favouring forwardly placed horses, he might be able to pull off a small upset over last year’s juvenile champ AUGUST RAIN.

RACE 6: ARIKARA won five of her last six for trainer Rob Maybin and might be good enough to stand the significant jump in class.

SATURDAY SELECTIONS: Post time 2:30 p.m.

RACE 3: Going with RUN RUDOLF in an interesting race with more than one promising 3-year-old. Rudy has been working fast for trainer Keith Pederson is out of B.C. Oaks winner and a half-brother to a Washington Oaks winner.

RACE 5: CURLING ROCKS takes a big step up in class, but he was impressive breaking his maiden for trainer Mark Cloutier and it is encouraging to see jockey Amadeo Perez keep the faith.
