The 2024 NBA draft is roughly one month away and here at College Sports Wire we are evaluating the college basketball stars who are hoping to hear their name called in June.
Today we discuss Dayton center DaRon Holmes, one of the top mid-major players in all of college basketball last season. Holmes tested well at the combine, with a wingspan over seven feet, and his versatility as a scorer and rim protecting skills have him rising up NBA draft boards.
In fact, Jonathan Givony of Draft Express reported Holmes has cancelled his remaining pre-draft workouts after getting a promise from a team in the first round.
Obi Toppin and Toumani Camara are two successful NBA forwards who came from Anthony Grant’s Dayton program, will Holmes be the third?
Below is a look at Holmes’ profile, including his measurements at the combine, strengths and weaknesses as a player, and current projected draft range and team fits in the NBA:
From: Goodyear, AZ
Played: Dayton (2021-2024)
2023-24 Stats: 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.1 blocks, 38.6% from three
Height: 6’9
Weight: 236.2
Wingspan: 7’1
Standing Reach: 9’0
Max Vertical Leap: 34 inches
- Excellent low post scorer thanks to great footwork and touch with both hands. It may not be a highly coveted NBA skill, but Holmes has it in spades
- Screen setting and rim running are natural skills for him. Rolling to the rim, per Synergy, was Holmes II’s second-most frequent play type last year – and he shot a solid 52% on 123 attempts while rolling to the hoop
- Uses athleticism and above average wingspan to be an effective rebounder and interior defender. An above average rim protector
- Has expanded offensive game enough to be a true floor spacer. Has a smooth jump shot and effective outside the arc
- Has not proven himself a consistent outside shooter, will be questions about how that skill will translate to the league. Only 2.5 attempts from three per game last season.
- Occasionally struggles with processing and decision making, can sometimes fail to act assertively when he should be going up strong. Only had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio as a junior, partly because of turnover issues (below) and partly a lack of facilitation/passing skills.
- Turnovers were an issue for him all three years in college – and they ranged from forcing things, getting lazy on drives to the hoop, and generally not great ball handling skills.
- Is inconsistent as a defender in space. Sometimes looks capable of switching, and his 1.8% steal rate last year is solid, but he also gets put on skates and could struggle more against NBA guards.
Draft Range: 15-30
CSW Mock: No. 34 to Portland Trail Blazers
Team Fits: Any team, contending or not, that needs rim protection or a screen setting, rim running backup big. Boston, New York, Memphis, Portland, Sacramento, it goes on.
