The 2024 college football season will feature a 12-team playoff format for the first time – a huge shift from the four-team format the committee has run with since 2014.
The top four teams will go to the regular season winners of the power conferences – SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC – while teams 5-12 will be determined by the selection committe.
One new wrinkle is the guaranteed inclusion of a Group of Five team, aka a program not from any of the major conferences. That will give teams from the Mountain West, American, Sun Belt, and Conference USA a chance to compete for a national title, which was unlikely to happen in the previous era regardless of how dominant the program had been in the regular season.
