The 2024 NBA draft is roughly one month away and here at College Sports Wire we are evaluating the college basketball stars who are hoping to hear their name called in June.

Today we discuss USC Trojans point guard Isaiah Collier, the No. 1 ranked recruit in the 2023 class and – for a while – considered the top NBA draft prospect as well.

Collier was productive at USC despite missing time with a hand injury, but ultimately the Trojans were a mess, finishing near the bottom of the standings in the Pac-12 despite having Collier, Bronny James, Kobe Johnson, and Boogie Ellis in the mix.

Part of the problem was Collier’s turnovers, an issue that plagued the freshman all season long. He displayed great passing and driving skills at times, but didn’t always take great care of the basketball.

Now, Collier looks more like a middle of the first round pick, rather than a top five candidate, although the upside remains sky high for the young guard out of Atlanta.

Below is a look at Collier’s draft profile, including his measurements at the combine, strengths and weaknesses as a player, and current projected draft range and team fits in the NBA:

    2023-24 Stats: 16.3 points, 4.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 3.3 turnovers, 54.3% on twos, 33.8% from three, 27 games

    Height: 6’2.5

    Weight: 204.6

    Wingspan: 6’4.75

    Standing Reach: 8’1.5

    Max Vertical Leap: 34 inches

    Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

    • Excellent in pick and roll situations, utilizes elite court vision and facilitation skill to attack opposing defenses
    • Great ball handler with craftiness, creativity, and an ability to change speeds with great balance. Can attack defenders with quick first step
    • Plus size for a modern NBA point guard, and is strong and bulky which allows him to finish through contact and get to the free throw line
    • Good floor general and lead guard facilitator type. Makes great reads with the ball in his hands

    James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

    • Turnover prone, partly from getting overzealous and part just from youth/experience
    • Inconsistent as a jump shooter, flashes a decent mid range game but was below average from three. Also a poor free throw shooter (67%) which is cause for concern about his long term ability to become an outside shooter
    • Limited wingspan hurts defensive effectiveness, and has at times looks disengaged defensively or lacks feel on that end of the floor
    • Relies on his bulk offensively, which might not be as easy in the NBA

    Alex Gallardo-USA TODAY Sports

    Draft Range: 8-20

CSW Mock: No. 17 to New Orleans Pelicans

Team Fits: Rebuilding teams or teams who can wait on a developmental point guard. San Antonio, New Orleans, Miami, Chicago, or Toronto make sense
