Jerry West, the man whose silhouette has been used as the NBA logo for decades, passed away at age 86 on Wednesday. His death was announced by the Los Angeles Clippers, where he worked as a consultant since 2017.

“Jerry West, the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 86. His wife, Karen, was by his side,” the Clippers announced.

West is among the most prolific figures in basketball history, earning enshrinement in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame three times – first as a player in 1980, then as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic Team in 2010, and again this year as a contributor.

West was also an elite college basketball player at West Virginia from 1957-1960, averaging 24.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 93 games with the Mountaineers. He was a three-time SoCon Tournament MVP, two-time SoCon Player of the Year, two-time First Team All-American, 1959 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and in 2009 was inducted into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame.

West’s legacy led to an outpouring of support on social media on Wednesday, including posts from his alma mater, the Hall of Fame, and some of the biggest names in basketball history taking time to release a statement.
