He can juggle a soccer ball, and do it with impressive skill and style. He spent one day at practice this week with a bird feather he found stuck in his helmet, just because it “felt like good luck. I’m a little bit spiritual.”

B.C. Lions wide receiver Travis Fulgham is a breed apart when it comes to your conventional idea of a football player. But on a team where locker-room chemistry is a pillar of its success, his personality has fit in seamlessly.

And now they want him to stand out.

“The good thing I will say about this offence is it’s not about fitting in,” said fellow wideout Alex Hollins. “We don’t need you in the offence to be only this, or only that. We need you to make plays. We need you to be a playmaker. That’s why you’re here.

“I know for sure that he’s gonna be a big-time playmaker. I have no doubt about it.”

In 2022 at BMO Field, Hollins’ first CFL catch was a 33-yard dart from Vernon Adams Jr., where the rookie just elevated from the practice squad rose above two Toronto Argonauts defenders to haul in the touchdown.

Two years later, Fulgham’s first CFL catch was a 50-yard strike from Adams against the Argos at BMO Field. The Leos QB had three players open on the play, after the defenders bit on a fake block.

“Perfect call, perfect play … VA made a great throw,” said Fulgham. “He could have picked anyone. I was in the middle so I just got lucky.”

Said Adams: “He was the first one I saw. I told him and Ayden Eberhardt ‘if those guys shoot … I’m gonna hit you.’ I just had to manoeuvre the pocket real quick and (Fulgham) was the first one I saw. I just got it out there. He made a great play and made me look good.

“That’s him. Big-play receiver. He makes tough catches. I know he didn’t have that many targets in the game, but you know how our offence is; sometimes it’s this guy this week, sometimes it’s this other guy that week.”

The story of Fulgham’s globe-trotting youth has been told many times, from his days in the NFL, to being profiled by Postmedia’s Steve Ewen after joining the B.C. Lions. He was just six months old when his family moved to Jordan. Then Cairo, South Africa, India, and not returning to the U.S. until he was a teenager in high school.

Watching Fulgham look like Lionel Messi as he played with a soccer ball after practice on Wednesday, Adams was asked if he could do that.

    “No. Definitely not,” he chuckled.

“He’s been around. I think he’s been to like 25-plus different countries. He’s an interesting guy.”

Fulgham only played two years of high school football, then made Old Dominion’s team as a walk-on, before earning a scholarship at the end of his first year. He, like Hollins, had stops in the NFL before coming north of the border.

Drafted by the Detroit Lions, he spent time on their practice squad, and then with the Green Bay Packers PR. The Philadelphia Eagles claimed him off waivers, signed him to their PR, waived, and re-signed. Three days after that, he active and playing against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football. His first catch was a 42-yard TD from Carson Wentz. The next week, he had 10 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown, but despite some more big-time games and leading the team in receiving yards, he was sent back down to the PR.

“Philly was some of the best times … and some of the worst times of my career,” said the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder. “Those five games were a lot of fun — electric. But then after those five games, going back to like a P squad role was pretty rough. It was good because I got to go out there show my talents. I wish I just got a longer time to do what I did.

“It was very rough. Because like being in that No. 1 spot … it’s a very addictive feeling. That rush and everything, being able to lead your team and put all that responsibility on you and then go on without it, it was definitely a rough transition.”

He bounced around the PR of three other teams before coming to the CFL, where he’ll take some time to adjust to things like the waggle and bigger field, and learn better touchdown celebrations to better fit in with his Lions teammates. As debuts go, it was

Hollins knows about that switch, making it himself after his own NFL experiences with the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings.

“Being in the NFL two years, I had absolutely no idea that I would be playing the CFL. When you’re there, you just feel like you’re gonna be there, and last. But it’s a business. Stuff happens, injuries happen. So I got here not knowing much about the CFL, and just working and grinding.”
