Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson and long snapper Clark Harris garnered national media attention in 2022 for staying on the field to check out the Super Bowl LVI halftime show. It was a salute to hip hop, and, as it happens, featured a guest appearance by 50 Cent.
The NBC broadcast that day even threw to commercial ahead of the start of the third quarter with shots of McPherson living his best music fan life as host Mike Tirico told the TV audience: “You think the Bengals field goal kicker is nervous? No. Evan McPherson watched the halftime show. He was out there the whole time. I love this kid.”

Bengals assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons was “uncharacteristically curt,” in discussions about it with Bengals.com‘s Geoff Hobson and tagged it as a “sore subject.”
McPherson told Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic: “Looking back on it, if there was a camera in my face, I wouldn’t stay out there. I get how it looked. It probably looked pretty bad. I probably wouldn’t do it again, but no regrets.”
McPherson had called his shot to TMZ beforehand, suggesting that he was going to watch the performance.
The Bengals did lose 23-20 to the Los Angeles Rams that day. McPherson, who was a 22-year-old rookie at the time, made both his field goals and both his extra points. He’s been good on 83.9 per cent (78-of-93) of his field goal attempts over his three regular seasons with Cincinnati.

As for the Lions, veteran right guard Sukh Chungh says that the players are excited about the attention that 50 Cent is bringing to Saturday’s game but it’s well down the priority list going into their CFL Week 2 matchup with the visiting Calgary Stampeders.
Coach Rick Campbell talked earlier this week about how the staff didn’t allow the players to watch pre-game concerts by OneRepublic and LL Cool J the past two years and were keeping that stance this time around as well.
“The focus is Saturday, 4 p.m.,” Chungh said, pointing to game time. “You got to show up.
“Fortunately we’ve been a part now of three big home openers with three high-level artists. We know that Saturday will look a little different. You have to be professional and take care of the moment. All that stuff is fun and cool, but winning is better.”

He did talk about the appreciation the players have for owner Amar Doman, who is bankrolling these events and upping the team’s profile in the process. The Lions are expecting a crowd of over 50,000. They last passed that plateau for a regular season game in Sept. 30, 2011, when they drew 50,213 for what was the reopening of refurbished B.C. Place.
“He’s leading from the front. That’s all we can ask for. We need to do our job when it’s time to,” Chung said.
The Lions are coming off a 35-27 road loss to the Toronto Argonauts in their season opener last week. Their problems included troubles protecting quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr., as the Argonauts recorded six sacks.
Changes are coming to the make-up of the offensive line for Saturday. Centre Michael Couture (back) didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. Tyler Packer starts in his place. Chris Schleuger was getting first team repetitions at left guard on both days. David Knevel (foot), who started at left guard against Toronto, didn’t practice on Thursday.

Asked about what the offensive line needs to do for a better showing on Saturday, Chung said: “We have to be on the same page all night and get yards on first down. We have to keep it simple and get some push up front.”
