PINEHURST, N.C. — This golf course will drive you mad, won’t it?
The greens are built to repel. The waste areas are a minefield of 75 unique and obstructive plant species. You’ll hit decent shots around this property. But you have to accept that they might end up in jail anyway. Consider Pinehurst No. 2 a living hell for golfers with short tempers.
Tyrrell Hatton is probably the world’s most frustrated golfer, and he’s never been afraid to show or acknowledge it. So what’s going through his mind during the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2? “Internal screaming, for the most part.”
The 32-year-old from Buckinghamshire, England, has been caught on a hot microphone demanding to know from his caddie if he’d ever seen a worse shot. It was far from the first time a hot mic caught that sort of interaction or worse. Or what he’s uttered at a press conference — he once called Augusta National “unfair at times.”
This is the Tyrrell Hatton Experience, so you’d think Hatton would find Pinehurst No. 2 to be a torture chamber. It has been quite the opposite. The LIV golfer, who finished T9 at this year’s Masters, is again positioning himself in the top 10 at a major championship. Hatton is 1 under through 36 holes with scores of 68 and 71, and shockingly, he’s pleased with his play at the Donald Ross design, which he described as a fair test.
“I can only play what’s in front of me at the time, and for the most part, I didn’t have anything to moan about other than myself,” Hatton said.
