A lot of eyes will be on England centre-back Marc Guehi tonight.
Guehi (pronounced Gay-ee), born in the Ivory Coast, is winning just his 12th cap tonight. But as a Crystal Palace fan, I’ve been able to see him develop and progress since the south London club signed him from Chelsea in summer 2021.
He is a calm, intelligent, mobile defender who uses his anticipation and positioning to snuff out nascent attacks before they arise. He’s also deceptively quick, strong and tall, great at playing out from the back, and plays on the left side of a two-man defensive pairing.
Yes, he’s not as aerially dominant as, say, Harry Maguire, yet I’d argue that even if Maguire were fit, I’d probably have started him next to John Stones at this tournament because of his elevated all-around game.
He has a big chance to cement his future at the heart of the England backline for the next 10 years with a big performance tonight.
