When an NBA draft prospect is generating constant headlines leading up to the draft, it’s usually someone projected to go in the top five, or at the very least in the lottery.
However, when you’re dad is NBA superstar LeBron James and you are represented by his agent, Rich Paul, you are not bound by the same rules. That’s the case with former USC Trojans guard Bronny James, who has been among the most polarizing draft prospects in recent memory.
James averaged 4.8 points per game at USC, shooting 36.6% from the floor and 26.7% from deep. He suffered a cardiac arrest last summer which delayed his start to the season, but it’s fair to say he did not perform like a typical one-and-done prospect.
However, there seems to be a fair amount of interest in the 6’3 guard, although some of that stems from previous reports that LeBron, who is a free agent, wants to play with his son before he retires.
James has only worked out with two teams during the pre-draft process, the Lakers and Suns, and reportedly there are other teams who tried to get him in for workouts to see him in a different context than his time at USC.
Paul reported three other teams have interest in the guard, giving us five total teams that are connected to James at this point, with one week remaining until draft day:
Picks: 17, 55
Quote: “LeBron is off this idea of having to play with Bronny,” Paul told ESPN on Wednesday. “If he does, he does. But if he doesn’t, he doesn’t. There’s no deal made that it’s guaranteed that if the Lakers draft Bronny at 55, he [LeBron] will re-sign. If that was the case, I would force them to take him at 17. We don’t need leverage. The Lakers can draft Bronny and LeBron doesn’t re-sign.”
Picks: 22
Quote: “LeBron is also not going to Phoenix for a minimum deal. We can squash that now.”
Picks: 27, 37
Quote: “Minnesota would love to get Bronny in, but I don’t know who their owner is going to be.”
Picks: 58
Quote: “[Mavs GM] Nico Harrison is like an uncle to Bronny. If the Lakers don’t take him at 55, Dallas would take him at 58 and give him a guaranteed deal.”
Picks: 19, 31
Quote: “Masai [Ujiri, Raptors president,] loves him. They could take him without even seeing him at 31. Workouts aren’t everything for these teams.”
