The 2024 NBA draft is now less than one week away and here at College Sports Wire we are evaluating the college basketball stars who are hoping to hear their name called in late June.
Today we focus on Duke forward Kyle Filipowski, who returned for his sophomore season with the Blue Devils and showed the necessary improvements to boost his draft stock while playing a more featured role. The seven-footer went from 15.1 to 16.4 points per game from his freshman to sophomore season, while improving his overall field goal percentage from 44.1% to 50.5%.
The biggest area of growth was as a three point shooter, where Filipowski went from shooting 28.2% (on 3.4 3PA/G) in 2022-23 to 34.8% (on 3.1 3PA/G) this past season. At his size, being able to consistently space the floor as an outside shooter is a massive benefit and will no doubt be a driving factor in where he gets selected.
Below is a look at Filipowski’s draft profile, including his measurements at the combine, strengths and weaknesses as a player, and current projected draft range and team fits in the NBA:
From: Westtown, NY
Played: Duke (2022-2024)
2023-24 Stats: 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 blocks, 1.1 steals, 55.9% on twos, 34.8% from three
Height: 6’10.75
Weight: 229.8 pounds
Wingspan: 6’10.5
Standing Reach: 8’11
Max Vertical Leap: 32.5 inches
- Floor spacing big man who will operate on the perimeter, has enough offensive versatility to fill multiple roles
- Can handle the basketball and has quality passing/facilitation skills, particularly when looking for cutters. Has the tools to be a connector at the next level
- Can score multiple ways, including off the dribble, from the three point line, around the rim, and in the midrange. Can be a pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop big
- Aligns well defensively and has the quickness and processing to be a solid NBA defender
- Athletic testing wasn’t great. Has a wingspan less than his height, and didn’t perform well on agility or jumping tests. Limits his impact on both ends of the floor
- Struggles to finish around the rim against bigger defenders thanks to lack of explosiveness
- Doesn’t rebound well for a guy his size, particularly on the offensive glass
- Not an ideal switch defender, will likely get exposed in PnR coverage unless he’s in a drop system
Draft Range: 12-25
CSW Mock: No. 12 to Oklahoma City
Team Fits: A team that needs a floor spacing big man. Oklahoma City, Portland, Philadelphia, Orlando, Milwaukee all make some sense
