The 2024 NBA draft is now less than one week away and here at College Sports Wire we are evaluating the college basketball stars who are hoping to hear their name called next Wednesday or Thursday.
Today we discuss Houston point guard Jamal Shead. Shead spent four years with the Cougars – three in the AAC and last year in the Big 12 – and was consistently among the best passers and defenders in all of college basketball.
His first year in the Big 12 was a rousing success, as the 6’0 guard posted career highs in points (12.4), assists (6.3), rebounds (3.7) and steals (2.2) while earning conference Player of the Year honors and a consensus All-American nomination.
Shead performed well at the draft combine and has held quite a few workouts with NBA franchises, including Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
Mocked as a mid second round pick, Shead’s age, size, and three point shooting will hamper his stock – but the defensive and facilitation should be enough for him to stick as a backup point guard at the next level, making him one of the bigger sleepers in this draft class.
Below is a look at Shead’s draft profile, including his measurements at the combine, strengths and weaknesses as a player, and current projected draft range and team fits in the NBA:
From: Manor, TX
Played: Houston (2020-2024)
2023-24 Stats: 12.9 points, 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 30.9% from three
Height: 6’0.25
Weight: 200.8 pounds
Wingspan: 6’3
Standing Reach: 8’0
Max Vertical Leap: 37.5 inches
- Physical and intense guard who will fluster opponents with his relentless pressure defensively. Has a thick, powerful frame to really get into opponents at the point of attack and cause turnovers
- Pass first point guard who makes his teammates better, a true floor general and a penetrator who is adept at finding the open man.
- May look to find open shooters when driving, but can also finish through contact and has a mid range game, enough to get his own looks at the next level
- Experienced point guard and team leader, is a vocal player on the floor and quality game manager
- 6’0 without shoes, and 6’3 wingspan doesn’t give him a ton of room to finish over defenders and limits his ceiling defensively
- Needs to be on the floor surrounded by shooters, otherwise his penetration skills aren’t able to be utilized and he becomes another non-shooting guard
- Has never proven himself to be a reliable three point shooter, can knock down wide open ones but isn’t going to be an impactful three point shot at the next level
- Advanced age limits his ceiling
Draft Range: 35-50
CSW Mock: No. 45 to Sacramento Kings
Team Fits: Teams in need of a backup point guard and more defense. Houston, San Antonio, Minnesota, Phoenix, Chicago, and the Los Angeles Lakers all make some sense
