The 2024 NBA draft is just a few days away and here at College Sports Wire we are evaluating the college basketball stars who are hoping to hear their name called next Wednesday or Thursday.

Today we discuss Pitt point guard Carlton ‘Bub’ Carrington. Carrington is the second youngest player in this draft class, coming off a surprisingly excellent freshman season with the Panthers in the ACC.

The 6’3 guard, who is cousins with longtime NBA vet Rudy Gay, was barely a top 100 prospect when he arrived at Pitt last fall. However, he immediately stepped into the starting point guard position and thrived for the Panthers, averaging 13.8 points and 4.1 assists while shooting 51.1% on two pointers and 32.2% from three on just over six attempts per game.

Carrington has extremely long arms and is among the fastest sprinters in this entire draft class, and while the efficiency numbers need some work the profile is extremely tantalizing – especially when considering his age.

Below is a look at Carrington’s draft profile, including his measurements at the combine, strengths and weaknesses as a player, and current projected draft range and team fits in the NBA:

    From: Baltimore, MD

    Played: Pittsburgh (2023-24)

    2023-24 Stats: 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 51.1% on twos, 32.2% from three

    Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

    Height: 6’3.75

    Weight: 194.8 pounds

    Wingspan: 6’8

    Standing Reach: 8’3

    Max Vertical Leap: 36.5 inches

    • An absolute menace in the pick and roll. Has versatility in his passes, utilizes patience to make the right read off of screens, and can create his own shot if the roll isn’t there
    • Good ball handler with a quick first step who flies with the ball out in transition. Athleticism and footspeed will translate well, and tight handle allows him to create his own shot
    • Active defender both on and off the ball, uses his sprint speed and long wingspan to alter shots. High motor on the defensive end, and with his tools could become a very good player on that end of the floor with age/maturity
    • Second youngest player in this draft class, tons of upside potential

    Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

    • Form is good, but the percentages on three pointers, mid-range jumpers, and pull-ups left something to be desired
    • Really struggles to finish at the rim, despite athleticism and length. Doesn’t have good balance and seems tentative when at the hoop. Will get pushed around by bigger defenders and may have to rely on jump shooting to be an impactful scorer
    • Despite long arms and quickness, wasn’t a super impactful defender last season. Doesn’t appear to have active hands and didn’t generate many steals or knock aways
    • Needs to improve vision and processing, particularly with a jump to the NBA level

    Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

    Draft Range: 10-26

CSW Mock: No. 10 overall to Utah Jazz

Team Fits: A rebuilding team who needs a point guard. San Antonio, Utah, Washington, Charlotte, and New Orleans all make sense.
