The Canucks announced the deal on their social media channels as a seven-year contract with a $5.5 million cap hit. They were looking for a top-six forward, likely to play on the Elias Pettersson’s wing.

DeBrusk, 27, is the son of former NHLer turned broadcaster Louie DeBrusk. The 6-foot-1, 198-pound left-shot had 19 goals and 40 points in 80 regular season games with the Boston Bruins this past season. He’s a three-time 25-goal scorer.

He averaged 16 minutes, 50 seconds of ice time last season with the Bruins, which was fifth among their forwards. He averaged 1:41 of power play time, 1:36 short-handed.

    He’s coming off a two-year deal with a $4 million cap hit.

“There’s a lot of things that intrigued me as a player. Obviously, playing with Pettersson or J.T. Miller and just seeing how they took their development next level this last season. It’s a team that’s ready to win and a team I know I can come in and help,” DeBrusk told TSN. “It’s a Canadian city that wants to win as well.

“Going into this process, I wanted to find myself in a place where I could fit it and help a team win.

“Vancouver is a team that really pushed hard. I could tell they really wanted me. It was something I was really excited to get done.

The Canucks also announced that they had signed forward Danton Heinen, 28, to a two-year deal with a $2.25 million cap hit, and forward Kiefer Sherwood, 29, to a two-year deal with a $1.5 million cap hit.

Sherwood had 10 goals and 27 points in 68 games with the Nashville Predators, while Heinen put up 17 goals and 36 points in 74 games with the Bruins.

Heinen, a Langley native and BCHL product, played previously with Pittsburgh, adding to the Penguins’ alums now with the Canucks.

Vancouver also announced that they have added defenceman Derek Forbort, 32, for one-year with a $1.5 million cap hit. He had no goals and four points in 35 games last year with Boston.

And they inked goalie Jiri Patera, 25, to a two-year, two-way contract. Financial terms weren’t announced. He played six games with the Vegas Golden Knights last year (1-3-1, 3.98 goals against, .893 save percentage) and spent the majority of the season with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights. Forward Nathan Smith, 25, inked a one-year, two-way deal as well. There were no financial terms. Smith had 12 goals and 31 points in 60 games with the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners. He’s played 14 NHL games in his career with the Arizona Coyotes.

a lot of teams got older today. #Canucks managed to sign three forwards all in their late 20’s. JT Miller remains older forward on roster at just turned 31. Forbort is 32. He and Tyler Myers 34 the oldest players on the team

For what it’s worth, DeBrusk was No. 13 on TSN’s Top 20 free agents list, while Toffoli was No. 15.

Toffoli, 32, inked a four-year deal with a $6 million cap hit with the San Jose Sharks. Toffoli is coming off a four-year deal that had a cap hit of $4.25 million. He had 33 goals last season between the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets.

Toffoli played 10 regular season games and seven playoff games with Vancouver in 2019-20 after coming over from the Los Angeles Kings at the trade deadline.

Toffoli was a pending unrestricted free agent then and wanted to come back — he told the Player’s Tribune that — but he was the player that then-GM Jim Benning was talking to Postmedia colleague Ben Kuzma about when he uttered: “We kind of ran out of time with him getting offers and one he needed to take.”

The Canucks went into the day with just over $14 million in projected cap space when you throw in potential long-term injury savings, according to www.capfriendly.com. They came in looking for a top-six winger to play alongside Elias Pettersson, a couple of defencemen and possibly a backup goalie.

There had been connections to Guentzel, considering his ties to the Canuck brass from their time together with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 29-year-old, who’s a two-time 40-goal man, has signed a seven-year deal with a cap hit of $9 million with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to reports.

With Florida’s tax advantages, it’s hard to guess what Vancouver would have had to pay to equal out that deal.

West Vancouver product Reinhart coming home to the Canucks would have been a fit with Pettersson and a nice story, but he re-signed with the Florida Panthers for eight years with a cap hit of $8.625 million.

The 28-year-old son of one-time Canucks rearguard Paul Reinhart is coming off a 57-goal year.

8:46 a.m. Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK’s Donnie and Dhali is reporting that Surrey native Brenden Dillon is going to the New Jersey Devils on a three-year deal. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli has Zadorov and Elias Lindholm, who’s also going to market after finishing last season with Vancouver, looking at the Boston Bruins.
