It only took four minutes for Brian White to get No. 40 in a Caps uniform, breaking a tie with Camilo for the team’s all-time regular-season scoring record, as Vancouver cruised to a 3-1 win over Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minn.
It was never a matter of if White would break the record, just a matter of when.
The Whitecaps headed to Minnesota fresh off their comeback win on Saturday, when White’s hat trick — the second of his career — dragged Vancouver out of a 2-0 hole to a 4-3 win over St. Louis City SC, breaking a 10-game scoreless streak at the same time.
The American striker got Vancouver off to the perfect start Wednesday, with a little help from former Whitecaps defender Michael Boxall.
The New Zealand centreback under-hit a back-pass to goalkeeper Alec Smir, allowing the pressuring Ryan Gauld to gather the loose ball and square an easy pass to White, who tapped it in for No. 40.

White now has 40 in 104 games with Vancouver. Camilo, who retired from professional play earlier this year, had 39 in 92 games with the Caps (2011-13).
White had previously broken the all-time record for goals across all competitions — again, with Camilo — in April when he played against his first MLS team, New York Red Bulls.
Also scoring for Vancouver (9-7-4) was Sebastian Berhalter and Mathías Laborda. Gauld assisted on all three goals, the first time a Whitecap has done that since Hwang In-Beom did it in 2019 against the LA Galaxy.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored for Minnesota (8-8-5) but the team that plays in front of the Wonder Wall was left wondering how they had lost their fifth game in a row for the first time in team history.

It wasn’t for lack of chances — their xG was a mammoth 3.8 — and they outshot Vancouver 17-4 overall. But goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made some massive point-blank saves as well as a penalty kick stop on Joseph Rosales. He finished with three saves.

White has nine goals in 19 MLS appearances this year. Gauld’s assist was his seventh of the year, to go with nine goals, which has seen him named to the MLS 30-man all-star roster by head coach Wilfried Nancy of the Columbus Crew. Nancy named 16 players for the July 24 game, which will see a LIGA MX all-star team visit Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio.
The Whitecaps road trip continues with a stop in Montreal on Saturday (4:30 p.m. Apple TV).
