The first two rounds of the 2024 MLB draft took place on Sunday ahead of the All-Star festivities this week in Arlington.
Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana, unsurprisingly, was the first player off the board to the Cleveland Guardians – who won the lottery with 2% odds for their first ever No. 1 overall pick.
College baseball stars were littered all over the first round of the draft, accounting for nine of the first ten and 13 of the first 15 selections. The SEC unsurprisingly had an excellent day, with Georgia star Charlie Condon going third overall to the Colorado Rockies, Arkansas lefty Hagen Smith at No. 5 to Chicago and Florida outfielder Jac Caglianone one spot later to Kansas City.
However, it was the ACC – and in particular Wake Forest – that dominated the headlines. The Demon Deacons had two players taken in the top five and three in the top ten, representing just under half the ACC players taken in the first round.
