College Basketball coach on the hot seat from each power conference – fitnessnacks

The college basketball coaching carousel was at full speed this offseason. Many struggling programs finally moved on from subpar coaches, including Louisville, Michigan, Washington, Stanford, DePaul, and Vanderbilt.

Additionally, high profile moves occurred at Kentucky, Arkansas, USC, BYU, and West Virginia, leading to a significant change in the college hoops space heading into the 2024-25 season.

While many of the hot seat coaches were replaced, there are still a handful of big name programs who could be making a change next offseason as well if things don’t go as well as hoped this upcoming year.

Below is a look at five coaches – one from each power conference – who are on the hot seat as the 2024-25 season draws near:

    2023-24 Record: 18-16 (10-10 in Big East)

Career Record: 35-33 at Villanova, 16-16 at Fordham

Neptune had the unenviable task of replacing legendary Jay Wright at Villanova, and his first season got off to a rocky start with injuries to Justin Moore and Cam Whitmore. That made a .500 season forgivable – despite sky-high expectations for the program – as long as improvement came in year two.

‘Nova won the Battle 4 Atlantis last season and looked on the way to putting that first season in the rearview mirror, but shortly after that things really unraveled for the Wildcats, leaving to another .500 season and a missed NCAA Tournament.

Villanova will not tolerate three straight seasons without a spot in the Big Dance, and with an offseason that didn’t wow a lot of folks it might be another rough year in Philadelphia – which could be Neptune’s last.

    2023-24 Record: 19-14 (10-10 in Big Ten)

    Career Record: 63-40 at Indiana

Woodson’s overall resume looks solid. He has a .612 winning percentage in three years with the Hoosiers, having made the NCAA Tournament twice and getting ranked as high as No. 10 in 2022-23.

However, a lot of that success came on the back of All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis, who was recruited by the previous regime. Last year Woodson’s team sputtered to a .500 record in conference play, with disappointing campaigns from star freshman Mackenzie Mgbako and veteran guard Xavier Johnson.

The offseason saw a litany of talented transfers commit to Bloomington, including Oumar Ballo, Myles Rice, and Kanaan Carlyle, and if Woodson can’t get this talented roster back into the NCAA Tournament he very likely could get the axe at his alma mater after just four seasons.

    Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

    2023-24 Record: 14-18 (8-12 in Pac-12)

Career Record: 155-131 at Arizona State, 42-20 at Buffalo

Hurley has led the Sun Devils of Arizona State to the NCAA Tournament three times in the nine years he’s been at the helm, although they have been at 11-seed all three times and have failed to win a single tournament game. Last year’s team had the worst winning percentage of Hurley’s tenure, and now they move into a significantly more challenging conference in the Big 12.

Hurley brought in the ninth ranked recruiting class in college hoops, headlined by Jayden Quaintance, which just puts even more pressure on him to get this team back over .500 and into the NCAA Tournament – an extremely tall order in the Big 12.

    Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

    2023-24 Record: 8-24 (0-18 in SEC)

Career Record: 33-34 at Missouri, 50-40 at Cleveland State

Will the real Dennis Gates-led Missouri Tigers please stand up? Gates led Mizzou to an outstanding 25-10 record in 2022-23, earning a spot in the final Top 25 rankings and No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they took down No. 10 Utah State before falling to No. 15 Princeton.

A promising first season led many to believe Gates would keep the momentum going in his second season, but that could not have been more wrong. The Tigers went just 8-24 and were winless in the SEC, a stunning drop-off that now has Gates squarely on the hot seat heading into year three.

Missouri has the ninth ranked incoming recruiting class and landed a pair of top 15 transfers in Mark Mitchell from Duke and Tony Perkins from Iowa – and while this team doesn’t need to win 25 games and earn a single-digit seed for Gates to keep his job, they certainly need to avoid going winless in conference play.

    Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

    2023-24 Record: 19-15 (10-10 in ACC)

Career Record: 92-66 at Virginia Tech, 299-244 at Wofford

Young has led the Hokies to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in his five years at the helm, but the team was a 10-seed and an 11-seed and did not win either game. A pair of 19-15 seasons is decent, but after four straight 20-win seasons under Buzz Williams, Virginia Tech has just one 20 win season in the Young era.

Young and Virginia Tech are projected to finish outside the top 10 in the ACC in 2024-25, and another sub-20 win season and failure to make the NCAA Tournament could be the last straw.
