Newcastle United coach Ben Dawson has left to join Leicester City, ending a 10-year association with the club.
The first-team development coach, who was a vital bridge between Newcastle’s under-21 side and the senior team, has joined Steve Cooper’s backroom staff at the King Power Stadium.
Dawson, who is from the north east, first joined Newcastle in 2009 before working for the FA. He returned to Newcastle in 2014 where he has filled several roles, including Under-21 head coach and academy head of coaching. He also took caretaker charge of Newcastle’s pre-season friendlies against Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United in China in 2019.
Paul Mitchell, Newcastle’s new sporting director, is set to assess the club’s academy set-up.
“Ben has been an important part of the Academy here for over a decade and has played a key role in the development of many players,” Steve Harper, Newcastle’s academy director, said.
“I’m delighted that Ben has the opportunity to work in the first team at Leicester City. This development is testament to his work ethic and to the excellent coach development work at our academy, supported by Ben, Neil Winskill and, more recently, Jack Ross.
“We all thank Ben for his excellent contribution to academy life at Newcastle United and wish him the best of luck with his coaching journey.”
