The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll have been revealed and while fans take time to digest the initital rankings, a few teams have some big-time questions to answer. With all of the changes taking place in 2024, teams will have to overcome a series of hurdles in order to make a run for a national title.
Overall, the Top 25 features the usual contenders for the College Football Playoff, which expands to 12 teams after a decade of only featuring four. However, there are a few programs that are highly ranked which may surprise some fans.
With the rankings come numerous questions. Here are the five biggest questions that a few teams will have to answer as the 2024 college football season gets started.
Is Missouri the real deal?
In 2023, the Missouri Tigers were quietly one of the strongest teams in the nation. Though the Tigers did not make the College Football Playoffs, they did take down the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl with a final score of 14-3. They finished the season with a final record of 11-2 and head into the 2024 season with most of last season’s roster in tact. Ranked No. 11 in the coaches poll, the Tigers are in prime position to move up in the rankings and get situated among the elites of college football late in the season.
Will Alabama hold onto a top 5 position?
Initially ranked as the No. 5 team in the preseason Coaches Poll, the Alabama Crimson Tide will face numerous challenges throughout the 2024 season. Kalen DeBoer replaces Nick Saban and the regular season schedule is not the easiest. The roster is full of talent and DeBoer has proven that he’s capable of coaching a team to the College Football Playoffs, so the burden will be on the Tide to prove they belong inside the top five. However, many will argue they are not worthy of their current ranking.
Which team challenges Georgia for No. 1?
The Georgia Bulldogs is the top-ranked team in the nation, but the Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks sit immediately behind at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Additionally, the Texas Longhornsk are at No. 4, and is now a conference foe. The Bulldogs and Longhorns will meet in Austin on Oct. 19, which could result in the winner taking over the No. 1 ranking.
Will Miami remain ranked?
The Mario Cristobal era in Coral Gables has not gone as planned. Many fans believe this is a make-or-break season for the head coach who made the daring move to go from the helm of the Oregon program to Miami, his hometown. This seems to be a constant issue for Hurricanes fans: enter the season ranked with high hopes of competing in the ACC, only to have a few mistakes and/or injuries lead to the season ending in disappointment. When ‘The U’ is strong, college football is more fun. They will enter the season ranked No. 19, let’s see if they can move in the right direction as the season progresses.
Is Florida State ranked too low?
The ending of the 2023 season for the Florida State Seminoles did not go as planned. From failing to make the College Football Playoffs to getting blown out in the Orange Bowl, it was not a fun offseason for Florida State fans. Now, they’ll enter the 2024 season ranked No. 10, which begs the question: is that an appropriate ranking? This is a revamped roster, full of key incoming transfers, and the program seems determined to bounce back and make a run for the College Football Playoffs. While there are clear arguments for either position, I stand on the side of No. 10 being too low. There are a few teams ranked ahead of the Seminoles that I believe FSU is better than.
