The 2024 college football regular season is just a few weeks away. The game, as we know it, has undergone many changes and most will be debuted in the upcoming season. Mass conference realignment and the expansion of the College Football Playoff top the list.
While the offseason has featured numerous headlines regarding the evolution of the game, as well as the reintroduction of the EA Sports College Football 25 video game, fans should get acquainted with some of the teams that have all the makings of a national title contender.
Recently, CBS Sports revealed a full preseason ranking for every FBS team in the 2024 season. Inside the Top 25, nine SEC teams were named.
1. Georgia Bulldogs
Despite failing to reach the College Football Playoffs in 2023, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are looking to bounce back with another strong season. It’s become commonplace to assume Georgia will be No. 1 in the polls. Let’s see how the team fares in an expanded SEC with a much larger Playoff playing field.
4. Texas Longhorns
Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns have an opportunity to begin their time as an SEC program at the top of the pack. No adjustment period needed with this group as they look to return to the playoffs. Overall, this team finished the 2023 season playing like a top-four team, so it would not be shocking to see the Longhorns start 2024 in this position.
5. Alabama Crimson Tide
No Nick Saban? No problem. According to CBS Sports, the Alabama Crimson Tide could begin the 2024 season ranked as high as No. 5, which may surprise fans who aren’t too familiar with new head coach Kalen DeBoer. Considering the immense talent found on this roster, paired with the success DeBoer has found elsewhere, this team has the makings of a contender.
6. Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss has been a quietly good team for a few years under Lane Kiffin. With the SEC doing away with divisions and the playoffs being expanded, the roadblocks have been removed and the Rebels have a clear path to the postseason.
11. Missouri Tigers
If you are surprised to see Missouri ranked this high, I would highly encourage you to rewatch every game they played in last season. Not only did the Tigers manage to impress in 2023, coach Drink managed to retain the team’s biggest playmakers. A favorable schedule could have the Tigers rolling late in the season, ranked among the usual elites of college football.
12. LSU Tigers
The LSU Tigers are looking to bounce back in a big way this season. Brian Kelly is in search of consistency with this program and there’s no better time to do it than during a period of uneasiness, as everyone is feeling when big-time change comes around. Look for LSU to sink or swim in 2024, we should have our answer by mid-October.
15. Tennessee Volunteers
I’ll be honest, this is the first team mentioned on this list that I don’t believe is accurately ranked. The Tennessee Volunteers of 2024 could mean trouble for any team on their schedule. At the end of the day, a ranking of No. 15 puts them right in the middle. Play well and the Vols move up, fail to perform and they’ll move down.
18. Oklahoma Sooners
Like the Texas Longhorns, the Oklahoma Sooners will be making the move to the SEC. However, the Sooners aren’t expected to have as easy of a transition. A difficult schedule could lead to a disappointing season, but being ranked inside the top 25 proves that this team has the ability to prove many people wrong.
20. Texas A&M Aggies
A new era of Texas A&M Aggies football kicks off in 2024 and expectations are somewhat mitigated, but this roster has enough talent on it to carry the team to a successful season if everything goes their way.
