Mr. 305 is staying true to his roots.
Legendary recording artist Pitbull is reportedly purchasing the naming rights to Florida International University’s football stadium, according to FIU board documents and reported on social media by Pete Thamel.
Pitbull will pay the university $1.2 million across five years, $6 million total, to have FIU Stadium changed to Pitbull Stadium.
According to Thamel, the naming is expected to be finalized on Tuesday, with approval from the Board of Trustees still needed. Assuming all goes through, Pitbull will be the first known musical artist to have a college stadium bear his name.
Pitbull is from Miami and has long represented the city, with the nickname ‘Mr. 305’ a reference to the Miami-Dade county area code. Pitbull, whose full name is Armando Perez, is a Grammy award winning artist with over 25 million studio album sales and over 100 million singles worldwide.
Pitbull Stadium will host its first game when FIU takes on Central Michigan on September 7.
