Cameron Smith, a four-star linebacker in the 2025 recruiting class, flipped his commitment from the Duke Blue Devils to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Thursday.
Smith attends St. Joseph’s Prep School, the top high school program in Philadelphia. He is currently the 167th ranked overall prospect in the 2025 class at 247Sports, as well as the 19th ranked linebacker and fifth ranked prospect in Pennsylvania.
The 6’0, 200 pound linebacker committed to Duke back in February, but a meeting with new Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen in late July helped swing the in-state prospect to the Nittany Lions.
“Basically, he told me to keep working hard and I’ll achieve my goals,” Smith said after the visit. “I believe that we have a good relationship and that he is a cool person outside of being a coach as well.”
The commitment is huge for Penn State not just because of Smith’s talent level, but because the program has recently struggled to recruit out of St. Joseph’s. Once Smith signs, he will become the first St. Joseph’s player to do so since John Reid in the 2015 recruiting class.
