ANAHEIM — Carson Fulmer has been trying to prove that he is more than just a stopgap for the rotation.
A former top prospect who reached the majors as a starter, Fulmer pitched well enough in his first few starts with the Angels to keep getting the ball.
Fulmer had a bad night on Tuesday, though.
He allowed five runs in three innings of the Angels’ 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Angels have lost four of their last five games.
It was the first time in Fulmer’s six starts this season that he’d allowed more than three runs. He had a 3.60 ERA in his first five starts, and that went up to 4.82 with this performance.
He walked George Springer on five pitches to start the game. Two outs later, he issued another walk, to Spencer Horowitz. Ernie Clement then hit a bouncer that hit third base and popped into left field, pushing home the game’s first run.
Fulmer then gave up a two-run double to Will Wagner, who went down to get a changeup at the knees.
Two innings later, Fulmer gave up back-to-back homers to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Horowitz. Fulmer threw a sweeper to Guerrero and a fastball to Horowitz, and both were located up and over the middle of the plate.
After that, left-hander Kenny Rosenberg came in and did a nice job holding the Blue Jays to one run over five innings. His “reward” for such a bullpen-saving performance is likely to be a trip back to Triple-A Salt Lake, as he makes room for a fresh reliever.
Rosenberg gave the Angels a chance if their offense could have done anything, but they squandered the few opportunities they had while right-hander Kevin Gausman was shutting them down.
In the second inning, Jo Adell grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. The next inning, Nolan Schanuel was at first when Zach Neto punched one of his three singles into center field. Schanuel started to try for third, and when he realized that was a bad idea, he stumbled going back to the bag, and he was easily thrown out.
It didn’t help that Neto’s three hits were all followed by Logan O’Hoppe outs.
The Angels’ No. 3 hitter saw his slump extend to 28 straight hitless at-bats. Each of his first three at-bats on Tuesday were with a runner in scoring position.
The Angels are now 3 for 46 with runners in scoring position over the last five games, ever since they scored 17 runs in a two-game span in New York.
Their only runs in the first two games of this series were on solo homers on Monday night and Willie Calhoun’s solo blast in the ninth on Tuesday.
More to come on this story.
