Former Ducks center and franchise icon Ryan Getzlaf will don a new hat as the NHL announced in a Wednesday news release that he joined its Department of Player Safety.

Getzlaf, 39, won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007 as a second-year player and developed into the Ducks’ top pivot and longest-tenured captain, scoring 282 goals (fourth in team history) and becoming the franchise leader in games played (1,157), points (1,019) and assists (737). He also represented Canada internationally, garnering a gold medal twice at the Olympics and once each at the World Championships, Under-20 World Junior Championships and Under-18 World Junior Championships.

Over 1,157 NHL games, all with the Ducks, he scored 282 goals and 1,019 total points.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety is headed by another one-time Duck, former enforcer George Parros, who became involved with DPS in 2016 and succeeded Stéphane Quintal as its top official a year later. Now, one of the club’s toughest players of all time will have its most prominent leader and most prolific scorer working under him.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ryan as the newest member of our department. His accomplishments on the ice speak for themselves: he won at every level and was widely respected for being a hard-nosed and highly-skilled player and effective leader,” Parros said in a statement. “From his rookie NHL season in 2005 until his recent retirement, he lived and played through many of the changes our game has seen, which will provide our group with unique and valuable perspective moving forward.”

Getzlaf, who retired in 2022, had been working in player development with the Ducks since last season, including at this July’s development camp. His new, full-time role with the league will mean he is leaving the organization in any official capacity, a move that was supported enthusiastically by the Ducks as he branched out into a new phase of his illustrious career.
