There’s a lot of water under the bridge since trainer Pat Jarvis won her first race as a trainer at Sandown Racetrack on Vancouver Island with Amazing High on Oct. 25, 1976. There was a bit of water flowing down the faces of many in the winner’s enclosure when Diocles rallied to win the Sir Winston Churchill at Hastings Racecourse on B.C. Cup Day Aug. 5. It wasn’t just those in the winner’s enclosure who had tears in their eyes: It was the many fans of one of the most popular trainers in the Hastings backstretch.

Due to her many generous acts, Jarvis was the recipient of the HBPA Richard Yates Backstretch Award last year. She was 16 when she took out her trainer’s licence 50 years ago. She knows what the makeup of a good horse is, which includes Davette, who won the 1981 B.C. Oaks for her father Albert Jarvis.

“I basically grew up at the track,” said Jarvis. “There is no other place I would rather be.”

Jarvis has trained a few good horses of her own, including Jack Diamond Futurity winners Kermode and Lord Rosberg. Lord Rosberg also won the CTHS Sales Stakes as a two-year-old. Neither developed into top three-year-olds. Diocles has though, and will be one of the favourites in the three- and four-year-old Division of the CTHS Sales Stakes Monday night’s 7 p.m. start with eight races on the card. With a strong performance Monday, Diocles will make his next start in the Grade 3, $125,000 B.C. Derby on Sept. 14.

Diocles was ambitiously spotted by Jarvis for his two-year-old debut, and he justified her belief in him with a runner-up finish in the B.C. Cup Nursery.

“I thought I had something to work with and he proved to me I still knew what I was doing when he ran such a big race in the Nursery,” said Jarvis. “It’s been a great ride with him and that was an emotional victory in the Churchill. He came out of the race in excellent shape and hopefully he will keep moving forward.”

Jarvis is not a one-trick pony. She is also a seamstress and makes many of the owner’s silks worn by the jockeys at Hastings. She also makes all the blankets given to the winners of the stakes races at Hastings and for many big races at Fraser Downs.

“It was kind of by accident that I got into sewing,” said Jarvis. “When my dad came down with dementia, we wanted to keep him at home, and it took 24-hour care. I was basically at home all the time and needed something to keep me busy and help take my mind off everything that was going on. I decided to take up sewing and found out I loved it.”

It did not take long for Jarvis to get rolling in her new vocation. The first saddle towel she sold was bought by local Hall of Fame Trainer Allan Jack.

“A.J. really liked the saddle towel and — not knowing I made it — he asked me where I got it from,” said Jarvis. “When I told him where it came from, he ordered a dozen.”

A former drag racer who can strip a Chevy blindfolded, Jarvis was once labelled “the fastest gal in the Northwest.” She is hoping Diocles will be acclaimed the fastest horse in the Northwest following the running of the B.C. Derby.

Parking is free Monday night for racing fans.

    Monday selections

First race 7 p.m.: We kick off the card Monday with the first of four CTHS-B.C. Sales Stakes races. There may not be much value but No. 5 Breezin Brianne looks too good to be true. A perfect two-for-two in her young career and should keep the streak going.

Race 4-5: Air Force should be able to control what should be a pedestrian pace and grab the dough in the CTHS Stake for three- and four-year-old fillies. Couple her in the exacta with Matsqui.
