EA Sports is pitching a “significant evolution in gameplay intelligence,” according to a press release the company put out Thursday morning in conjunction with the cover announcement. And that plays into the use of the Hughes’ trio, according to EA Sports.
“NHL 25’s dedication to hockey intelligence is personified by this year’s cover athletes,” the press release explains. “While Quinn, Jack and Luke Hughes each have created impressive careers in their own right with unique skill sets, they are renowned as a family for their exceptional skating ability and hockey IQ. As the first siblings to grace the cover of an EA SPORTS title, their ability to anticipate the game perfectly matches the way that ICE-Q opens up NHL 25 and gives players time and space to create plays.”

Quinn, 24, led all NHL defenceman in scoring last year with 92 points, including 17 goals, in 82 games with Vancouver and won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best rearguard. Fellow blue liner Luke, 20, came in third in Calder Trophy rookie of the year balloting after putting up nine goals and 47 points in 82 games for New Jersey. Jack, 23, who’s a centre, had 27 goals and 74 points in 62 games, finishing second in Devils’ scoring.
EA Sports accidentally — or maybe accidentally on purpose, if you will — leaked a trailer of the cover announcement on their YouTube channel on Monday before pulling it down.
EA Sports introduced the NHL series in 1991 and the first worldwide cover featured Los Angeles Kings goalie Glenn Healy. Quinn Hughes becomes the third Canuck to get a worldwide cover, following Kirk McLean and Markus Naslund. The cover has also been graced by Mario Lemieux, Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.

The company has also done regional covers that featured Naslund as well as Elias Pettersson and Henrik and Daniel Sedin.
The game this year is “built on an all-new logic-driven animation system,” according to EA Sports.
“The new ICE-Q gameplay system represents a foundational shift in how players will experience the game, with its deep intelligence giving them complete control of the ice,” said Mike Inglehart, Senior Game Design Director at EA Vancouver. ”Hockey is built different, with NHL 25 delivering greater authenticity, bigger team rivalries and inspired by the sport’s next-generation superstars who continue to redefine the game.”
