The long-awaited toll lanes on the 10 Freeway in San Bernardino County are set to open early Thursday, Aug. 29 —  just in time for Labor Day weekend.

The 10-mile stretch will include two lanes in each direction between the Los Angeles County-San Bernardino County line in Montclair and Etiwanda Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga.

The improvements are expected to help relieve congestion and improve traffic flow, bringing a shorter commute to drivers during peak traffic hours, transportation officials said.

The San Bernardino Express Lanes will be the first toll lanes to open in the county.

So early-morning commuters can use the new lanes on Thursday morning’s drive, crews plan to remove closure signs and barriers about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, San Bernardino County Transportation Authority spokesperson Tim Watkins said.

Drivers traveling eastbound on the 10 will be able to enter the new express lanes at:

    • The Los Angeles County/ San Bernardino County line in Montclair
    • Mountain Avenue in Montclair
    • Fourth Street in Ontario

Drivers on the eastbound 10 Freeway can exit at Mountain Avenue, Fourth Street, Haven Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga or Etiwanda Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga.

Drivers traveling westbound on the 10 can enter at:

    • Etiwanda Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga
    • Haven Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga
    • Fourth Street in Rancho Cucamonga
    • Mountain Avenue in Upland

After that, drivers traveling west could get off of the 10 at the Los Angeles County/San Bernardino County line, Haven Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, Fourth Street in Rancho Cucamonga or Mountain Avenue in Upland.

The project is part of the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority Interstate 10 Corridor Project, which started construction in spring 2020. The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority and California Department of Transportation invested  $929.2 million to add the express lanes to the 10 Freeway as part of a three-phase project, a news release states.

Two later phases are expected to begin construction next year and will eventually bring a total of 33 miles of tolled express lanes to the 10 Freeway.

In the second phase, 11 miles of express lanes will be built between Pepper Avenue in Colton and the 15 Freeway. Later, a third and final phase would add 12 miles of toll lanes between Ford Street in Redlands and Pepper Avenue in Fontana, a news release states.

These lanes will help relieve congestion through one of the “worst bottlenecks in the county for the movement of goods and people,” an authority news release states.

To pay for the lanes, a driver must deposit at least $20 into a FasTrak account and toll fees will be deducted from a user’s account as they use the lanes.
