Sportsnet and the Flames announced Monday that Jon Abbott would be calling Calgary games on the tube this coming season, succeeding Rick Ball, who’s now a part of the Chicago Blackhawks TV broadcast crew.
Ball is best known in Vancouver for having the call on B.C. Lions games, but he was also calling Canucks games radio for TSN 1040. John Shorthouse was also still doing some radio play-by-play for the Canucks during Ball’s tenure.
When Ball left for Calgary for the 2014-15 season, it was Abbott who was brought in to replace him. He had the gig, teaming with analyst Dave Tomlinson, until the 2017-18 season, when Sportsnet 650 landed the broadcasts. Brendan Batchelor took over the play-by-play duties, with Corey Hirsch as analyst.
Batchelor still has the Canuck call on radio for Sportsnet, paired with analyst Randip Janda.
Tomlinson signed on last season to do Canucks’ Sportsnet TV games, sharing duties with Ray Ferraro and working alongside Shorthouse.

Abbott called Ottawa Senators regional TV games on TSN this past season, and also called National Lacrosse League games on TSN.
On the Calgary broadcasts, Abbott will work alongside Kelly Hrudey and Greg Miller as analysts, and Ryan Leslie as host.
Abbott explained in a press release Monday that his minor hockey team growing up in Aylmer, Ont., was called the Flames, because his minor hockey association received funding from then Calgary owner Harley Hotchkiss, who was from neighbouring community Tillsonburg.
“The hockey world is a small one and often provides full circle moments,” Abbott said.
Flames president and CEO Robert Hayes added: “Participating in the search for a play-by-play person with our partner Sportsnet, we were very impressed with Jon’s broadcast, his resume and his reputation within the industry.”
