Vancouver Rise FC doesn’t have a ton of runway before things are supposed to get started on the pitch for them. They’re one of the six founding clubs in the Northern Super League, the new Canadian loop that is set to have its first games in April 2025.

The Vancouver side unveiled its moniker to fan groups and media at a launch event at the Parq Vancouver on Monday afternoon. They’ll wear teal, gold and black and the logo features three peaks that represent Cypress Mountain, Grouse Mountain and Mount Seymour.

Season ticket membership deposits will go on sale to the public in the coming weeks. Check out the team’s website for more information.

Vancouver Whitecaps owner Greg Kerfoot is also the Rise FC owner. While there’s bound to be some sharing of resources, Rise FC brass says the club will operate as its own separate entity. They’re planning on hiring their own media relations staff, for instance, rather than sharing with the Whitecaps.

Rise FC sporting director Stephanie Labbé says that the club is “deep into the process now,” to hire its first coach and she’s hoping to be able to announce that “within the next month.” She also says that she’s hoping to be able to announce the first player signing “in the coming weeks.”

“It’s pretty crazy to think about building an entire roster,” Labbé explained when asked about how much she and her cohorts have to get done and how little time they have to do it. “Some days it’s daunting. Other days it’s really amazing. One good thing is that I love doing puzzles so I feel like every time I’m doing something I’m adding another piece to the puzzle. Every time I get a new piece that I can add it brings more excitement and it makes it feel more real.”

“Feels more real,” was also how Labbé described getting Monday’s announcement out into the public.

“For players to be able to look at that logo and look at the team and be able to say ‘That’s the team I want to play for, that’s the team I inspire to be a part of,’ is amazing,” she added. “For us, working on the sporting side, it gives a lot more meaning to what we’re doing.”

Labbé spoke passionately, too, about why Rise was selected as the team name.

“I think there’s that sense of empowerment,” she said. “I think this name really evokes that feeling. I get goosebumps thinking about what Vancouver Rise can embody, what it can be connected to. I think it’s soulful, and, like I said, it brings emotions and also has a deep tie to our community, to the city.”

Rise president Sinead King feels that the logo “has a little nod to the Whitecaps without being too similar to it.”

The Vancouver Breakers and then Vancouver Whitecaps formerly played in the semi-professional USL W-League.

“We want to be clear that we’re our own identity, our own brand, our own club,” King continued. “We are really proud to have the support and the collaboration with the Whitecaps and Greg Kerfoot has done a tremendous amount of work with the women’s game, the men’s game and growing football overall in Canada.”

A home field hasn’t been named as of yet. King said that “anywhere over 5,000 as a consistent fan average would be amazing.” That rules out B.C. Place as a regular venue. King tagged Swangard Stadium in Burnaby as an “iconic stadium,” because of its ties to the Vancouver 86ers/Whitecaps playing there and admitted “it’s certainly an area we’re looking at.”

Labbé wouldn’t bite on any questions about Swangard. The facility’s capacity is listed at 5,288.

“All I can say is that the venue that we pick is going to be a great feeling in this city,” Labbé explained. “It’s going to give our fans and our players a great atmosphere.”

Along with Vancouver, the Northern Super League is slated to feature the Halifax Tides, AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild, Ottawa Rapid and a Montreal team.

TSN’s Kate Beirness hosted Monday’s launch party and she told the crowd that the league has TV deals with both TSN and CBC.
