The talent all across the college football landscape is going to be incredibly strong this season. College Football is back, and the games are going to be oh-so competitive in 2024. The Atlantic Coast Conference is wide open, and the winner will have a great chance to play in the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff.
With every team in college football, a strong running back is needed. Without the run game, it is tough to be successful over a long period of time in the ACC. We took a look at all the running backs in the conference to prepare for the season.
Here is our look at how we rank the top 11 ACC running backs in the 2024 college football season:
11
Jaquez Moore, Duke Blue Devils
The question around college football is – can Moore become a star in the Duke offense? He is certainly talented enough. The 5’10 back from Live Oak, FL was named a third-team preseason All-ACC selection. He has played 35 games and rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career. No Jordan Waters should give him a shot in 2024.
10
Mark Fletcher Jr, Miami Hurricanes
If Mark Fletcher can stay healthy this running offense for Miami is going to be fantastic. The staying healthy part is what all Hurricanes fans are looking out for as the season kicks off. The Hurricanes have a big test against Florida to open up the campaign.
9
Lawrance Toafili, Florida State Seminoles
The lightning to Roydell Williams thunder in the Florida State running offense. Neither was great in the loss to Georgia Tech, but look for both to light it up as the season moves along.
8
Jordan Waters, North Carolina State Wolfpack
Waters spent the first five years of his college career at Duke and now he stays in the ACC and joins the Wolfpack to finish out his career. Waters seems to be the type that will do well in any offensive system. He has rushed for 20 touchdowns over the last two seasons.
7
Treshaun Ward, Boston College Eagles
Bill O’Brien needs to make sure Treshaun Ward gets the football in 2024. He averaged six yards per game playing at Kansas State and Florida State. He has great vision and can find the gaps as well as anyone on this list. It will be interesting to see his usage as the season gets going.
6
LeQuint Allen, Syracuse Orange
Great speed from Allen. He was able to get 245 carries for over 1,000 yards a season ago. He looks to be in great shape for that workload and more in 2024.
5
Jamal Haynes, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Haynes was a leader in the win over Florida State in Week 1. Last season he came away with more than 1,000 rushing yards. He does not get the carries the other backs in this group, but his talent is there. He is very shifty and has big time explosiveness.
4
Phil Mafah, Clemson Tigers
Phil Mafah split time with Will Shipley last season and was the most impressive of the two. He is a punishing runner and picked up over 5 yards per game car a season ago. He also finished with 13 touchdowns. He keeps the chains moving, and will dominate in the red zone.
3
Damien Martinez, Miami Hurricanes
Damien Martinez is going to get the football early and often in Mario Cristobal’s offense. The 6’0, 230lbs workhorse is a bruiser. He makes defenses look silly and can pick up huge chunks at a time. Look for a big season from Martinez in 2024.
2
Jadyn Ott, California Golden Bears
The first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference for Ott. He was tremendous last season with 150+ yards in games against Arizona State, USC, and Washington State. The 6’0, 200 lbs running back is commonly grabbing 10+ yards a carry.
1
Omarion Hampton, North Carolina Tar Heels
Human wrecking ball. Also, a game-wrecking ball. What a beast he has been for the Tar Heels. He went for over 230 against Appalachian State, but also 165+ in games against Duke, Clemson, and Miami. He went for over 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, and more are expected this season.
