On Saturday, from Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater Oklahoma – the South Dakota State Jackrabbits will take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This game is slated to be played at 1pm local time for the Cowboys.
South Dakota State comes into the game as the defending FCS champion. The Jackrabbits allowed just a field goal against Montana in the title game and won by 20 points. During the four postseason games, they allowed just 15 total points.
Oklahoma State was 10-4 a season ago, and beat Texas A&M in Houston in front of 55,000 fans to end the season. The Cowboys are one of the teams favored at the top of the Big 12 standings for 2024.
Take a look at our 5 things to watch for South Dakota State vs. Oklahoma State:
1
Can Ollie Gordon do Ollie Gordon things?
When the Oklahoma State Cowboys are playing, Ollie Gordon has to be watched. He is the best running back in all of college football, and the favorite to win the 2024 Heisman from the running back position. The Cowboys run their offense through him early and often. South Dakota State was tremendous on the defensive side, but will have to be on a whole new level to contain Gordon in this one.
2
Will Alan Bowman take care of the football?
Bowman went 34 of 49 for 402 yards and 2 touchdowns in Oklahoma State’s bowl game last year. He was also strong in the Big 12 Championship, as he finished with three touchdowns in that game. 20th-year head coach Mike Gundy has a ton of confidence in Bowman, along with a pair of talented receivers.
3
Any chance Mark Gronowski pulls an epic upset?
Quarterback Mark Gronkowski is one of the key starters back for South Dakota State on the offensive side of the ball. Gronowski will face some tough pressure when he sees the Cowboys defense. In the title game a season ago, he completed 13 of 21 passes and threw for a touchdown, also rushing for 53 yards and a score. He will need a big game to lead to an upset in Stillwater.
4
Will Jimmy Rogers ever lose a game?
One of the keys to watch in this game is the head coach of South Dakota State. His name is Jimmy Rogers, and he has never lost a game as a head coach. This is his biggest test yet. He has won 15 in a row. Rogers has been with the Jackrabbits since 2013 when he took over as the linebackers coach. Even in 2010-2011 he was with them before heading to Florida Atlantic for a bit. Rogers also played at South Dakota State. Not many love this program more than him, and he is going to have his squad ready.
5
Can the Jackrabbits make the Cowboys feel the pressure?
The final thing to watch – if the Jackrabbits can keep this game close – do the Cowboys start to feel the pressure? Week 1, against a lesser opponent. The Cowboys have a ton of expectations, and losing Week 1 is not one of them. How will the favorite handle the pressure?
