Overall, the Big 12 had some great success in the first week of the college football season. Penn State smacked around the West Virginia Mountaineers, and Houston looked poor in their loss to UNLV. Outside of that, no real big surprises with the results in the league.
Kansas got the party started on Thursday night, TCU joined in on the party on Friday, and many teams played throughout the day on Saturday, including a couple of late games.
As we head to Week 2 of the season, it’s fun to look ahead and see how the teams will stack up going forward. Take a look at our Big 12 stock report following all the Week 1 results.
1
Stock Up: Kansas Jayhawks
The big story here is Jalon Daniels playing in this game, and playing strong. He completed 9 of 15 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Devin Neal was excellent, and a strong case for one of the best Week 1 performances from a running back. He averaged 14 yards per game and had a 53-yard scamper in the game. Neal finished with two touchdowns. Kansas at Illinois is a good early test for the Jayhawks.
2
Stock Down: Texas Tech Red Raiders
So, the Red Raiders won the game. Yes, they did. The Red Raiders are 1-0. But, a 52-51 win over Abilene Christian is certainly something that should not be overly exciting for Red Raiders fans. The offense scoring 52 points was terrific. But, they will need MUST better defense is they want to compete out of the Big 12. Texas Tech led 22-7 after one. 32-21 at halftime. But, Abilene Christian came back and forced overtime.
3
Stock Up: Utah Utes
The Utah Utes played Thursday night. The Utes are the favorites to win the Big 12, so beating Southern Utah is nothing to get overly excited about. But, the 49-0 dominating fashion, with quarterback Cam Rising looking really good has their stock up. The Utes are an interesting team to discuss when talking about the College Football Playoff. Utah and Baylor will be a fun week two tilt!
4
Stock Down: West Virginia Mountaineers
To add insult to injury for the Mountaineers – they had a long rain delay, and things did not get much better at home. West Virginia only had 246 total yards in the game, while the Nittany Lions went over 450 in the game. It was a dominating game from a good Big Ten team in Penn State. In Morgantown, West Virginia expected much more of a football game. The Mountaineers stock is down after week one.
5
Stock Up: Baylor Bears
Great to see the Baylor Bears get off to a great start in a 45-3 win over Tarleton State. The Bears scored 21 in the first quarter and had 28 at halftime. Dequan Finn was strong, and only played a portion of the game. He finished with 192 yards passing and two touchdowns. The defense was also strong, allowing only 80 yards via the pass. It was an expected win, but the momentum of playing well will hopefully for their sake carry over to the road game at Utah next.
6
Stock Down: Iowa State Offense
Okay, so the Cyclones won the game, but the offense will need to be better. The defense was an elite unit against an undermanned North Dakota team. But, the offense has to be better. The run game was not really good. They ran the ball 22 times, and only got 86 yards. The quarterback Rocco Becht was the lone touchdown on the ground for the Cyclones. Becht was strong, but overall, the offense was not great. Stock down until they can show out better.
