In one of the most thrilling college football games on Saturday, the Vanderbilt Commodores upset the Virginia Tech Hokies in Nashville.

After a slow start, the Hokies scored 24 points in the second half to bring the game to a 27-27 tie after four quarters. The Commodores scored in overtime and walked away with a massive upset win at home.

The game was played at FirstBank Stadium, which is where the Commodores will play their Week 2 game against Alcorn State. Virginia Tech will seek their first win of the season in Week 2 at home against the Thundering Herd of Marshall.

Here is our stock report for the game between Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt:

Pavia was pretty strong in the passing game as well, but only threw it 16 times. But, one thing to be really excited about was his ability to run the football. He took 26 carries in the game for 104 yards and a touchdown. If he can get his arm going to open receivers, he is going to have himself a nice 2024 season.

The Hokies just could not get the ball moving on the ground. Quarterback Kyron Drones rushed 16 times, but picked up just 19 yards in the game. The only effective running back was Bhayshil Tuten, but even he picked up just 34 yards in the game. He did find the end zone for the Hokies, but the run game was less than impressive.

Big plays? Yes sir. Saturday’s game featured both a 62-yard catch and a 29-yard catch from Ali Jennings. This guy can go up and get it and run down the field with the best of them. Defensive plans are going to have to have an idea how to guard the 6’2, 205 lbs receiver and former West Virginia Mountaineer.

Overall, the Vanderbilt defense was pretty solid. But, seeing Virginia Tech score 24 points in the second half is concerning. The Commodores are going to want to sharpen up on that. They had a chance to put the Hokies away, and just could not get off the field in the second half of the game. Their defense in the second half sees their stock go down.

    Syndication: The Tennessean

Okay, so maybe a stretch here.. But, Alcorn State and Georgia State are next. A potential 3-0 start puts them with an opportunity to just win 3 of the final nine to become bowl-eligible. The Commodores have Ball State, Auburn, and South Carolina on the schedule.

They also have Kentucky, so even if we ignore the games against Missouri, Alabama, Texas, LSU, and Tennessee, the chance to win six games is higher now than it was on Friday.
