The opening week of the College Football season has come and gone, and what a week it was. The week started on Thursday and extended through Monday. It was a college football fan delight. The action was fantastic, with tight games throughout the weekend.
The week finished Monday night with Florida State losing their second game of the year, this time falling at home to Boston College. The loss means the ‘Noles have doubled their losses from a season ago.
It’s great news for the Eagles, however, who look like a potential surprise team in the ACC under former NFL coach Bill O’Brien and dynamic quarterback Thomas Castellanos.
BC was not the only team to have a surprisingly strong start to the campaign. As we start to turn the page to Week 2, we wanted to reflect a bit on Week 1 and the team’s who came away as the biggest winners:
The Eagles completely dismantled ACC foe Florida State on Monday. This was a standalone game, so great for Boston College to have eyeballs on the performance. Kye Robichaux is going to be a problem in the run game for opposing defenses.
Thomas Castellanos will be able to use his experience and arm to make things difficult for opponents all season. Boston College hosts Duquesne this weekend and then will face a stiff test at Missouri in Week 3.
Starting quarterback Miller Moss looks like he could be a huge threat to opposing defenses all season long. That is the first line of good news for Lincoln Riley and his USC Trojans. USC has a better defense, albeit against an LSU Tigers team that lost all sorts of talent from a season ago.
Dudes were flying around the field, and getting stops against a legitimate power program. The Trojans were a legit big-time winner in Week 1. The Trojans can’t celebrate long. Following their game against Utah State, they go on the road to Michigan on September 21st.
It was a big win for one of the frequent SEC bottom feeders on Saturday. The folks in Nashville are not expecting many wins, but they are 1-0 after Vanderbilt led throughout the game but needed a touchdown in overtime to down Virginia Tech.
Quarterback Diego Pavia only had to throw the football 16 times in the game but was accurate. He also was strong with his legs, rushing 26 times for 104 yards. The Commodores host Alcorn State in Week 2, before back-to-back road games at Georgia State and Missouri.
A season after reaching a bowl game, many wondered if the UNLV football program had any more room to move upwards. The answer to that question was a resounding yes following their blowout win at Houston.
The Rebels looked great, keeping Houston quarterback Donovan Smith from throwing a touchdown pass in the game. Smith also had 11 carries for -12 yards in the game. The UNLV defense was outstanding from start to finish.
The Rebels will host Utah Tech next, before a trip to Kansas in Week 3.
Sure, the Penn State Nittany Lions were ranked in the Top 10 to start the season. But, going on the road to Morgantown and completely manhandling the Mountaineers solidified them.
James Franklin’s team is constantly discussed as the “next best” type team but never given the true validation as one of the teams to beat. This win in Week 1 could help alter that. The Nittany Lions have four straight home games now until they go on the road to USC on October 12th.
