The ACC headlined the first week of college football action, with the first and last game of the week resulting in wins for Georgia Tech and Boston College…and a pair of losses from Florida State.
The ‘Noles can’t lose in Week 2, since they don’t play, but there are quite a few other marquee matchups taking place across the ACC landscape this weekend.
The only conference matchup once again involves Georgia Tech, who heads on the road to face a new look Syracuse team led by quarterback Kyle McCord.
The rest of our must-watch ACC games are of the non conference variety, including an epic ranked on ranked matchup taking place in Charlotte and a big time opportunity for a new conference member to pick up a marquee win over a Big 12 team.
Below is a look at our five biggest ACC games of Week 2, with a pair of honorable mentions first:
(Honorable Mentions: Duke at Northwestern, Cal at Auburn)
1
NC State at Tennessee
When: Saturday, September 7 at 7:30 PM ET
Where: Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, NC)
TV: ABC
NC State took care of business against Western Carolina in Week 1, but a much bigger test awaits them in Week 2 when they head to Charlotte to take on the mighty Tennessee Volunteers in the SEC.
Tennessee and NC State are both ranked in the AP Top 25, making this one of two ranked on ranked games in Week 2 – the other being the epic Texas at Michigan battle.
2
Pitt at Cincinnati
When: Saturday, September 7 at 12:00 ET
Where: Nippert Stadium (Cincinnati, OH)
TV: ESPN2
The River City Rivalry may not be among the oldest college football rivalries, but it is a heated one and that will be on full display Saturday morning in Cincinnati.
The Bearcats are 1-0 after defeating Towson in Week 1, while the Panthers dropped 55 points in a win over Kent State. This is the first big test for either team, and should make for great entertainment especially if Pitt quarterback Eli Holstein can build on his strong Week 1 performance.
3
App State at Clemson
When: Saturday, September 7 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: Memorial Stadium (Clemson, SC)
TV: ACC Network
Clemson is being given an 81.6% chance of winning this one according to ESPN’s matchup predictor, but after a drubbing in Week 1 against Georgia, this team could be reeling enough for the Mountaineers to come into town and stun the college football world…again.
4
Georgia Tech at Syracuse
When: Saturday, September 7 at 12:00 ET
Where: JMA Wireless Dome (Syracuse, NY)
TV: ACC Network
The only conference matchup of the week in the ACC pits No. 23 ranked Georgia Tech against an upstart Syracuse team in New York. The Orange handled Ohio in Week 1, 38-22, behind four touchdown passes and 354 passing yards from transfer quarterback Kyle McCord. Can he provide more of a challenge for GT than Florida State or Georgia Southern did?
5
BYU at SMU
When: Friday, September 6 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas, TX)
TV: ESPN2
SMU is 2-0 to begin their ACC career, having defeated Nevada and Houston Christian. They’ll face a bigger test in BYU on Friday, a team that struggled down the stretch last year in the Big 12 but who won their first game of the season, 41-13, over Southern Illinois.
