It was quite a Week 1 for the ACC in the 2024 college football season. Georgia Tech kicked off the season with an upset win over Florida State in Dublin – one of two conference losses already taken by Mike Norvell and the ‘Noles.
Georgia Tech is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, tied with Boston College who also took down Florida State in a standalone game on Monday evening.
FSU becomes the fourth preseason top ten team to start the season 0-2, although they were not the only ACC team to disappoint in the first week of the season. Virginia Tech had to rally to force overtime against a weak Vanderbilt club – and still lost – while Clemson put up little fight against Georgia.
Power ranking the ACC after just one week already looks quite a bit different than the preseason. Of course Florida State’s disaster start is part of that, but so too is a big win for Miami over Florida, a season-ending injury to North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson, and a really strong start to Tyler Shough’s career at Louisville.
Below is a look at our Week 1 ACC power rankings, with our preseason ranking included as well:
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Florida A&M (9/7)
Miami climbs to the top of the ACC power rankings after a dominant win over in-state rival Florida. Sure the win may say more about the Gators than the ‘Canes, but many other ACC teams had chances to pick up big wins and failed, while Miami got it done. They should move to 2-0 with a win over Florida A&M in Week 2.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Tennessee (9/7)
NC State handled their business against Western Carolina in Week 1, and get a chance to host SEC powerhouse Tennessee in Week 2. A win there could push them into the top spot.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Jacksonville State (9/7)
Louisville obliterated Austin Peay in Week 1, dropping 62 points behind four touchdown passes from veteran quarterback Tyler Shough. The Cardinals have a great shot to move to 2-0 against Jacksonville State in Week 2, and a fun matchup awaits them toward the end of the month when they face Georgia Tech on September 21.
Record: 0-1
Next Opponent: App State (9/7)
Clemson losing to Georgia is a reasonable outcome, but getting crushed 34-3 isn’t a good look for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. They face a tough test in Week 2 against a strong Appalachian State squad, followed by NC State on September 21.
Record: 2-0
Next Opponent: At Syracuse (9/7)
The Yellow Jackets took down Florida State in Dublin to kick off the college football season, and followed that up by defeating Georgia State by a score of 35-12.
A road tilt with Syracuse awaits, followed by a non-conference bout with VMI and then a road trip to Louisville which should give fans a better sense of how good this team really is.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Duquesne (9/7)
Bill O’Brien led Boston College to a monster win over Florida State on Monday night, helping make quarterback Thomas Castellanos look like a breakout star.
Whether the Eagles can keep up this kind of performance all year long remains to be seen, but after Duquesne they’ll get a huge test in Week 3 when they go on the road to play Missouri.
Record: 2-0
Next Opponent: BYU (9/6)
SMU is one of two ACC teams with a 2-0 record so far, having won at Nevada (barely) before unloading 59 points on Houston Christian. The Mustangs have tough contests over the next month, hosting both BYU and TCU out of the Big 12 before facing Florida State and then going on the road to take on Louisville to start October.
Record: 0-1
Next Opponent: Marshall (9/7)
Virginia Tech needed 24 second half points to even force overtime against Vanderbilt, a game they still ultimately lost. The Hokies have a lot of work to do if they want to contend for a top spot in the ACC, although they get a chance to turn things around with upcoming games against Marshall, Old Dominion, and Rutgers before resuming ACC play at Miami.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Charlotte (9/7)
The North Carolina Tar Heels beat a Big Ten team in Week 1, but lost starting quarterback Max Johnson in the process. Johnson will be done for the year, meaning UNC will rally around Conner Harrell to help lead this team in the post-Drake Maye era.
Record: 0-2
Next Opponent: Memphis (9/7)
It’s been nothing short of a disaster start to the season for Mike Norvell and Florida State. The ‘Noles went to Ireland and got beat down by Georgia Tech’s running game, and returned home to host Boston College and succumbed to the same issues – poor run defense and inconsistent play from quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. Can they turn things around in Week 2 against Memphis? Either way, this team is not competing for a CFP spot barring a turnaround of epic proportions.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Georgia Tech (9/7)
Syracuse took care of Ohio in Week 1, 38-22, and will now get a chance against upstart ACC foe Georgia Tech in Week 2.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: At Auburn (9/7)
Cal took care of UC Davis to kick off their first season in the ACC, but they’ll get a much bigger test in Week 2 when they go on the road to take on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: At Cincinnati (9/7)
Pitt hung 55 points on Kent State in the season opener, which prompted the Panthers to go with newcomer Eli Holstein as the quarterback going forward.
He’ll face a much bigger test the next two weeks as Pitt heads on the road to face Cincinnati before returning home to face another Big 12 opponent in West Virginia.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: At Northwestern (9/6)
Duke held Elon to just three points in the season opener, a strong start for a program undergoing significant changes this offseason. At Northwestern is a tough task, but the Blue Devils will get UConn and Middle Tennessee State to help find themselves before hosting rival North Carolina on September 28.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: Virginia (9/7)
Wake Forest took care of business against North Carolina A&T in Week 1, with quarterback Hank Bachmeier tossing three touchdowns and running back Demond Claiborne rushing for 135 yards. Virginia awaits in Week 2, followed by SEC foe Ole Miss in Week 3.
Record: 0-1
Next Opponent: Cal Poly (9/7)
Stanford played a close game against a decent Big 12 opponent in TCU, but until they prove it they will remain toward the bottom of the standings after a few rough years in the Pac-12. They draw Cal Poly at home in Week 2, and then get two straight conference road tests at Syracuse and Clemson.
Record: 1-0
Next Opponent: At Wake Forest (9/7)
Virginia took care of business against Richmond in Week 1, but will have a much bigger test against fellow ACC foe Wake Forest on the road in Week 2.
